I've seen a couple of them before. (I think) If you run it on a car, you need to address the issue of there not being water p***ages through the intake. I guess you could make your own, but you'd have to also address some kind of thermostat system, also. I think. They really are cool looking. I guess it is a good thing you don't have a Y block!
I have a couple of those, but never used them yet. They come with a water port that bolts up close to the intake on the front of each head. It does not cross over so each side is seperate, and there's no provision for a thermostat. When I get around to using mine I'll use rubber hose to connect the ports to a thermostat housing like the roundy-round guys use, then to the radiator from there. I've heard that those carbs are the same as the first Corvettes used. Supposedly they are worth a mint. Might sell off my extra carbs to pay for building the motor. alchemy
Don't own a Y block but if I had the intake I'd be findin' me one. The water crossover isn't that big an issue.
Yep, those Carter side drafts are worth a mint to 6 cyl Vette restorers, Ive bought several Y Block marine setups and sold off the carbs on EBay for mucho dinero. As far as using on a car engine? Furgetabou***. You would get more performance out of a 57 and later 2bbl setup. Now, if you want to hack that intake up and convert to a multi carb log then you might have something interesting.
MarkX has a Y-Block sitting out behind his shop he's wanting to sell. Says it was a running motor when receintly pulled. I'm not sure if he's going to keep it now though.
The other weekend i saw one of those...terrence, son of terry's rod shop is going to use it on his mercury y block. pretty trick if you ask me..got alot of old guys eyebrows to curl... tok
Hey 286, thanks for the confirmation on the Corvette carbs. And also thanks for the info about the lousy performance. But I'll probably try it anyway. Kind of like using three 97's when a single modern four-barrel would work a whole lot better. It's all about the unique-ness and COOL factor. alchemy
It's all about the unique-ness and COOL factor. Those are far from unique! Dunno know about cool tho until you try. Dont be suprised to hear some snickers from other Y types. Agree a 4 bbl would be a better all around setup but for cool I like my 573 Edelbrock with 3 94's. Just picked up another for the next project.
They may be far from unique in terms of production numbers, but how many do you see running around on cars? Just about zilch. If you're a boat restorer they might be "ho-hum" but to a car dude they scream wild. Performance might **** more than a Hoover, but they're still hella cool to look at. Turn the carbs into throttle bodies, install some injector bungs, and convert it to the anti-Traditional devil that is EFI and you might have a decent performing crazy *** intake setup.
Don't want to get into a ******* match 286, but you probably hear just as many snickers when you whip out your 94's. Only 97's belong on a hot flatty. Everybody knows that. I'll give my setup a try someday, then I'll report back to you about the performance and the "oooh" factor. alchemy
And you KNOW what I think about 97's!! Didnt mean the earlier comment as a pisser either. Its just that Y Blockers have seen those things since the 50's and the question keeps getting asked. Maybe in the desert they are rare but with all the lakes in this area they are still quite common. But yet you dont see (m)any on something with 4 wheels; at least I dont remember any. I think it was Tommy who explained the problem using them. I still say they would look "cool" with four 94's up on top log style. Sell the Carters and you could buy 4 new 94's from Charlie Price.....or a couple of 97's
Getting that setup to work right and then cover it with a hood is just plain wrong! I agree, makes ME want a Yblock too!
