Turned down a '63 split myself in '73, $1800, with a new set of Cragars.

As for the time machine, I'd be on a '62 Belair bubbletop, big 409/4 gear in Roman red (I like the way the OP thinks!). Just like the first car I ever owned, though just a 283/3-tree model.

It may not be as convinient back then but for sure it was simpler. You get a flat it may take you two or three days to carve a new wheel out of stone but think of the gratification of doing it yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. If I could go back with the knowledge I have now and take my lady with me, I would go back to 1957, stay there and relive the whole thing all over again. Only this time we would be much smarter and would make better decisions much earlier,,,like keeping that old worn out 1956 Ford Crown Victoria or the 1962 Ford Galaxie XL 406. Ah, those were good times that we just didn't understand then.

Hell with a dealer ordered new car. I'd opt for the cash and buy every $300-$500 32-36 Ford roadster and 3/w coupe, and Willys coupe I could get my hands on until I was out of money...

  8. If I were say 18 yrs. old in 1940, I would probably have bought a brand new '40 Ford DeLuxe Coupe and driven it around town wearing one of those era suits you see in all the movies from the '30's and 40's. Of course it would be Mandarin Maroon and I would also being wearing one of those "cool-assed" fedoras every guy wore back then. The reality would be that I would probably soon go off to war (and hopefully return) and reclaim the Ford from the chicken coop it had been stored in. Clean off the dust and chicken shit, fire up the flathead and once again hit the streets.............Don.

I would have to get either a 1949 Chevrolet Convertible, or maybe a 1949 woody wagon. (last year for wood outside for Chevrolet) then I would go to the parts counter and order all the accessories in the catalog.

I would order it at the end of the model year, and ask that I get all the 1949 dealer books, posters, banners and whatnot they had hanging in the dealer showroom while I was there.

I would go back to 2001 and instantly write the check...
1967 GT500, been parked for many years, genuine car in the Registry as whereabouts unknown, perfect body and interior, exhaust all there, all 5 original Magstars, and the 4spd, engine missing- for 10K. Add another 5K for the NOS sideoiler block, tunnel port heads and 1-4V intake in the corner. Had the checkbook in my pocket, and the car was just across town. Wavered a little as I had just bought an Indian, but had the money. Called him two hours later, sold... :(
    Yeah, I know...

All of the nice 40 coupes cruising around the Central valley in the early 60's for $3-400 bucks. Also a few 40 41 Willys coupes that were prowling the streets back then-one in particular was a dark green car with a 409 and a 4spd for $1100. Many others too like all the solid axle vettes for $12-1500 in the early 70's. Bought my 57 Fuely in 76 for $1200 and our 55 for $800-still have them.

I'd buy the '67 Z 28 my Dad wouldn't co-sign for, but then I'd have lost it when I got drafted.

I would go back to '64, 65, 66 and have my '56 Chevy D/Gaser, back then my every day driver, and some of them fast women that I ran around with then. That would be before my wife now HAHA.

If you had a Delorian time machine that would take care of one car and you could go back and get a new Model A pickup or a '30 Chevy truck and settle another debate...

I actually think about this a lot. Aside from scaring the shit out of Socrates in a fast car, ala Bill and Ted, I have a shopping list too.

I'd buy a couple acres of desert hillside, a bunch of concrete and every hi-po crate motor I could find. Z-11, fullie 327, 426 hemi, supercharged ford 312's and on and on. I might as well throw in a 35-36 3 window or 3 and a Lambo 400gt. And some letter cars. You know all of those famous Kustoms and movie cars last seen on a used car lot? Me too. I'm off to my hillside with a jack hammer....

If I could only make one stop in time:
    1957 Corvette
    1957 Bel Air Convertible
    1957 Nomad
    1957 Cameo
1957 COE car carrier to haul the others back.

Hey, since we are being hypothetical... I'd just get one of everything that was either going to be rare/valuable, or that I think is just plain cool. I say we all pull our money together and pay some smart person to invent us a time machine.

'53 Corvette. Lots of people don't like the first one, but I do....and while I was in '53, I'd head to Chicago, look up Hugh Hefner, and buy as many shares of Playboy stock as he'd sell me while he was trying to round up money to put his first issue out.
