IFS...can they be cool on a open wheeler?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 34RUSTROD, Jul 27, 2005.

  1. Looks aside for a moment, didn't Rod & Custom mag do a road test of two Deuce roadsters a while back? One with a traditional straight axle front end and the other with IFS. I seem to recall that the IFS roadster outhandled the trad frontend car on the skidpad. Or maybe it was the other way around, can't remember. Anybody know?

Just to say that John Granville Grenfell did indeed patent these.

He had many patents and many were used by other car manufacturers, notably Ford and Mercedes. I can't remember who ripped him off, one of them did, but the other used him as a consultant. He was a lovely old man when I knew him, and he claimed to have been the builder of the the first British Hotrod, which he made for an American airman. I have no details of this car, but he told me about 1971 that he had seen it in a magazine and he was credited with the build. A brilliant engineer, who aged about 80+ worked on my Austin 7.

I never saw anything with IFS beat one of these guys. I think a straight axle handles ok.

As soon as I see IFS on a fenderless car I think "street rodder, or some goober that has absolutely no clue." Case in point, at a show last year I saw a nice chopped model A coupe. Walked around the front to see a Mustang II front end with model A frame horns welded to the spring buckets!!! Quite possibly the ugliest chassis I've ever seen and a total waste of an otherwise cool car.

It can be done and be workable and yield a decent ride. But there is no way it is cool looking. A solid axle regardless of style or finish, is much more natural looking. I don't even like IFS on some full fendered cars like from the early 30's.

Here is a picture of friends 29 loboy with a IFS. Rides and handles very well, but not pretty. Even in chrome or polished stainless, they are still ugly.
