So I finally got my air ride hooked up last night. Initial test was going fine, and then it's like a fuse blew and I lost power to the compressor and the ignition. My power source for the compressor is coming from the wire that is designated for the radio, so not hooked directly into the ignition switch, but only has power when the switch is on. I've checked every fuse in the block, all of them look fine. Test light shows I've still got power to the always hot side of the switch and power to the fuse box. Battery is good. So now what? I'd appreciate any help fellas Thanks -Andrew
how many amps does the compressor pull when it's starting, and there's pressure in the system? My guess is way too much for the circuit you wired it to. try using a relay, connected to a fused wire to the battery post. but to get power to the ignition restored, you're gonna have to start tracing the wiring with a test light or volt meter, and see where the problem is. We have no idea what kind of wiring harness is in the car, so we could only make wild guesses.
I'll second what Jim said. Those compressors need to have a pretty big power wire run to them, unless you are using a relay (as you should). I've done it 2 different ways. BIG relay under the dash w/ BIG wire running to the compressor, and the latest one has the relay near the compressor, so no need to run heavy wire through the car. Good luck tracing down the current problem. Get it? Current problem? I crack myself up.
Always on fuse box feed (lights, horn)? How about ignition on fuse box feed (acc)? Ignition on feed anywhere else? Wonder if you toasted the ACC part of the ignition switch? This says 30 or 40 amp fuse and wired within 18 inches of battery. https://ridetech.com/instructions/30518000.pdf That should explain why that 5 amp radio circuit didn't like it.
Always use a relay that has a capacity that is higher than the maximum draw of the device that you want to power.
Radio wire is from the ignition switch. It takes its power from the ACC terminal via the fuse box. Could be a failure of the contacts in the switch due to the inductive load. ACC is also not powered during cranking.
Apart from the compressor being wired inappropriately it's unclear, we'll it is to me, what's not working. There's mention of ignition. Does that mean the engine won't run? What is the wiring system? I wonder what the fuse designated for radio is rated at, and what is (or was!) connected to it, and with what gauge wiring. And did the person who wired the compressor have anything to do with the other wiring of the car. Chris
