...any tricks to replacing the lower ignition switch on a 72 Nova column,..NOT the key lock tumbler but the switch on the lower column where the wires attach. ...seems I remember you have to put the trans(automatic) in neutral position before you remove this switch and replace?
    Thanks

No neutral isn't necessary while switching it out. That would apply more to the neutral switch. You will need to drop the column however to gain access.

The switch is slotted to allow for adjustment, put the 2 retaining screws in loosely and make sure the reverse lights work, the key rotates to off so you can the key out and the starter engages. You have to find the "happy spot" before tightening it down. .

Most new switches have a plastic sheer pin that holds them in position and will come with instructions as to how to install them. Most have the switch in the off position and you remove the key, make sure the rod goes in the hole and tighten the switch down before inserting the key, The ignition switch doesn't have anything to do with the shifter. The key lock position allows the shifter to be moved. The ignition switch has nothing to do with the back up lights. That is controlled by the neutral safety/back up light switch.

I'd say that Engineman's suggestion of key off and key out of the lock so the rod stays in position. Make sure the slot for the rod matches up and back together you go.
My challenge lately has been hanging on to the damned little screws to get the back in place. Fingers don't work well upside down and backwards under a dash.

...thanks guys,...the column is in my 47 Chev pickup, so the switch is more easily accessable,...as Johnny Gee said, now I remember the shift column position is with regards to replacing the nuetral safety / back up lite switch...did some trouble shooting and don't think the switch is my problem, mite be the starter...or solenoid,..most times it starts just great but every once in awhile nothin, not even a click or anything, then the next time it starts rite away, ever heard of that?

I keep a wad of windshield seal around and it holds screws to screwdrivers and sockets well. I have even JB welded a nut to a socket before to keep from losing it.

...found out the problem was pilot error,...this thing always starts with just a twist of the key after it's warmed up,...seems I wasn't turning the key far enuf to engage the starter,...
just got into that habit over the years....thanks for the replies.
