hey guys, got my fuel lines squared away for now and got the car up and running, other then a few little things and backing the front drivers brake up a bit ive only got one problem. ......which actualy could have been part of my "fuel line/pump" problem the car starts like its been sitting just waiting for you to hit the key and idles wisper quite like its brand new. the trouble is that the switch wont stay on the "on" position unless i hold it. you know when you turn the key and it hits "start" then the car starts and you let go of the key and it pops over to on right? it just wont stay. im preety sure theres no "adjustment" in a 1953 ford customline ignition switch so i was wondering--car is to far away and it in the dark to look at it right this second. but can i wire a toggle switch for the "on" and use the keyed ignition switch for just the teporary switch that powers the starter? or am i going to have to go buy a temporary switch? gona give it a go in the am but figured id ask the voice of experance and see what the hamb had to say. thanx tim
replacement switches are available. You can also go to any parts store and buy a new generic switch. If you dont want to fool with the old one, "hotwire' your car using the new generic switch
You may be able to replace the 53's switch with one from a 77 or so Ford pickup. It's a little larger on the mounting flange. Little longer once the plug is on, but it should fit easily within the 53 dash. These are still available at NAPA and the like. Most of them I've found in junkyards are in good shape. Be sure and cut the wiring far enough out so that the plug is usable. I believe replacement plugs are available at NAPA as well.
