I need to decide on an ignition switch for my A coupe. I have one of those universal swiches with the cheesy looking keys but I'd like to use a real Ford switch or something similar.

    What are you guys using?

I bought one from Kwik Wire. Made in USA, cheesy looking key. But it feels like a quality switch.$25.

I'm using 49-50 Ford ignition switch and keys plus the start button.

If your present switch works and your concern is the key appearance, then maybe
you could get a Ford key made to fit.

That would be simple and look good if you want a pushbutton switch or most all 53/60 Ford products use the same switch if you want key start. I dug this example up from the O'reilly page but you could find a similar one at Napa or other parts houses. You would have to come up with a bezel though. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/d...398&keyword=ignition+lock+cylinder!s!assembly

    Macs has a plain bezel for a 53/56 F100 http://macsautoparts.com/ford-picku...me-baaa-10852-i/camid/FPU/cp/JS0R3CHL1114263/

This page shows the bezel for a 58 pickup and down the page shows the spacer that goes between the switch and dash. http://cgfordparts.com/wwwsectionfiles/cg_cat3_switches_ignition.html#Ignition Switch Dash Bezel

Again all of these are examples and a bit of hunting may find a complete set or better prices or quality.

I like the idea of the ignition switch from O'Rielley. Do you know the dash hole diameter required for mounting? Thanks

Get one from a junkyard. Before Ron Francis we always used switches that were scavenged from a donor car. I guess it would have to be an old one now but repro switches are available for mid 50s cars. I think I still have switches that were harvested 50 years ago for future projects. I personally detest universalfitall switches with their no language pictures. Old switches can be taken apart, cleaned, lubricated and reassembled to give many more years of service. We used to test each other to see if we could identify the knobs on the dash. Old hotrod knobs did not have pictures of wiper blades or shining headlights. They annoy me.:D

Is it just the key itself that is bothering you? If so, do what I always do with my hot rods. I cut the head of the key to the same diameter as the shaft then mount it in to something cool. For example you could use a dice. I use small skull heads purchased from Hot Rod Herman. http://www.hotrodherman.com/

    Makes it an indivdual statement.

If you are using the Model A dash, there is limited space behind. I have used switches from the Ford suppliers like Mac's, Bratton's etc. They have universal type switches with "real" keys.

Like 56 Shoebox said, if it's the key that bothers you, somewhere on here it showed how a person cut down a pocket knife to fit the ignition switch. Definitely cool lookin' item....... just pull the key out, fold it up, and put in yer pocket.
