I am replacing the ignition switch in my 54 Merc wagon with overdrive, My question is Carpenter and Concours Parts has 1 ignition switch for 54 thru 59. If you look at Mac's they offer a 56 ignition switch for Merc auto and another one for Merc with overdrive. My 54 has been converted to 12 volt and has overdrive. what would been the difference in the 2 switches?
I thought they were interchangeable. What is interesting is both switches have the same alternate part number. Kind of tells me it doesn't really matter.
I have found that information in the Mac's catalog in particular is often wrong regarding what years of cars their parts will fit. I wouldn't pay much attention to them regarding fitment. Yesterday I put a NORS Wells Brand (made in USA probably in the 60's) in my '54 Mercury and it fit and works perfectly. The box was marked with the original Ford part # and stated that it was supposed to fit '52-'59 Ford and Mercury. Cost me only $15.00 on Ebay. I try to buy NOS or NORS made in USA parts for my cars before I buy reproduction stuff which is often imported junk. Alan
Alan is right, the part is interchangeable. I however went with the Dennis Carpenter ignition for my 54 and it works fine with my 12 volt system.
they are the same- the overdrive electrical only hook up is to ignition term ign switch is not controlling overdrive other than power to od relay while engine running
