"How much horsepower will I get from boring .30 over."

I hate that people instantly jump to tell you about their 350 bored .30 over. Or any engine for that matter. To me that's an insignificant fact or an engine build. I mean yes a fresh bore is nice, but don't go telling me like it gave you 50hp or something.

    A 350 Chevy with a 0.030" overbore becomes a 355 Chevy.
For street cars, boring is normally done to a used engine to clean up the cylinder walls and remove uneven wear. It increases the displacement a little, but that's an additional benefit, not necessarily the primary reason.

***uming your 350 Chevy already makes ~1 HP/cubic inch, and ***uming the engine package (cam, compression, intake, exhaust) supports it, you might get another 5 HP.

You will find more hp if the overbore is "number's matching" ;)

I my younger days, I never heard people include the overbored size in the cu. in. Seemed to show up 20 years back or so with the guys with the 350 chevys. Never understood it then nor now.

If it's rhetorical, then they don't really want you to answer. Sounds perfect to me.

The one that always got me was " I had a **x with a 3/4 race mill" does that mean it only makes 3/4 of the race before it stalls or blows up?

A rhetorical question is a figure of speech in the form of a question that is asked to make a point rather than to elicit an answer.

    What's the point? HRP

Boring .30 over would be a huge overbore, so much so that you would get into your water jackets big time. I mean, that's almost 1/3 of an inch overbore. On a 350, that would yield 404 CID. I would suggest knowing what YOU are talking about before you ridicule other people. BTW, 45-50 years ago, car magazines mentioned that Grumpy Jenkins' Grumpy's Toy (I), a '66 Chevy II, ran a .030 over 327. I guess perhaps you should have been around to tell them that was a stupid thing to include in the articles. Grumpy's Toy XI, a '74 Vega, was 331 cubic inches as well, 4.030 bore and 3.25 stroke, producing 680 horsepower.

If you had an engine built before 1960 you could bore it anywhere from .125 to .250 oversize and get a noticeable increase in displacement and horsepower. A 371 Olds could be bored and stroked to 480 cu in. .030 is nothing but it is all you can get on some cheap thin wall motors from the seventies and eighties.

  25. LOL my 355 made 406 and 444 when it was fresh. Sorry I just couldn't resist and I doubt that it made its power from the overbore.

I get what you are saying, how much HP will a set of headers give me. Well it depends on if you have something to bolt them too or not I suppose. :D

Damn it two days in a row I missed it again. That is a 5/16 over bore more or less. To put in perspective a 302 is a 283 bored 1/8 more or less. A .30 bore would be 4.5/8

There's a great video on YouTube where they smash up headers. They start with a few dents and end up with a mess and I think all they lost was like 5hp.

  27. They lost more then that they also lost a decent set of headers.

How much wood could a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

    Now that's rhetorical!

  29. And it actually has an answer:

As much wood as a woodchuck could chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood. LOL :D :D
