***le is 95.00,AV plates are 30.00, appraisel was 175.00, bond on 10000.00 value was 180.00. I paid sales tax of 226.00 on my original purchase of 3233.00. They may send a bill for more but I have a bill of sale for that amount and it can be verified by my E BAY receipt.

They got me for a B plate, truck is lettered, you give them pictures, they saw that, but I do get unrestricted mileage. Next one of these I do I'm going to rattle can paint and then get my appraisal. I really got cracked over the head on my appraisal for having it all fit finished and painted. I would recommend that if you are building something nice to get your car registered during fitment. Get it running and safe and put a coat of anything for paint on it, and finish it out later.

I'm at 31/2 months, it's bonded, now I'm waiting. Was it the State Police or the Sec of State Police?

Just another good reason not to live in ILL noise. Talk about stupid, I`ve been in almost every state and I still ended up in Il. I hate that our pres claims to be from Il. Of course I think we should kick Cook county out of the country.

Ilinois declined the ***le I submitted because I did not have original frame rails or trans case showing that the VIN number matched my sedan so I now have to get the sedan to a point where it is completed enough to be a car so I can get an apprasial and start the process. They also recalled a ***le I had on a '34 Ford PU that again did not have the original rails.

Use a dull or color tinted primer on your initial mock up, get it running and all your stuff running, get your appraisal. Hopefully you will not have such a high one, then after you are tagged you can pretty finish it. If you pretty finish it now the tax is gonna kill ya.

  13. Does anyone know FOR SURE if you have to have fenders for the inspection? I am in the process of building a fenderless truck and cannot find anywhere that you must have fenders to get thru the inspection.
I have heard somewhere that a vehicle over 1500lbs has to install fenders. Do I have this correct?

A windshield wiper, a horn, headlights, tail lights, not sure both, paint, but not necessarily pretty, scxrub line, never fired mine up, parking brake, had to show it hold the car still by rocking against it. If you have a set just krylon them and stick them on for pics and inspection, pull them off later, process takes 5 months I wouldn't want a set back.

If you're in Palos you'll get the same guy I had, he does to I 80 south, the lake east and the big river west, a big chink of turf, he's a good guy, they will want to bang some numbers into your frame some where, they are open to where and a tag inside the driver door on the jamb and they bang in some symbols over it, it's riveted and permaglued, it ain't comin off, and they bang half on and half off so you can't pull it and restick it.

Maybe I'm wrong, but if you've got a ***le in your name for the last ten years, I don't think you have a problem???? Anybody have any actual experience with this type of situation? Stu

Just think of what would happen if states really got smart and started taxing cars for the value we have them insured for. Then its Katy bar the door.

but what we paid for them & what they may be worth is 2 different things.
I know a lot of us started out w/junk that cost nothing compared to what they are worth when they are done.
And hell some states are already trying to screw us on the taxes, they think we are buying & driving Barrett-Jackson cars/trucks
If my truck was worth 100's of thousand of dollars, first off I couldn't afford it, secondly I'd sell it & buy some POS & drive it instead since i couldn't afford the insurance on that HIGH $$$$ car/truck. But then IF I could afford a Barrett-Jackson car I wouldn't care about the taxes or how many MPG it got :D I'm doing good to afford the **** I have let alone what the state thinks my junk may be worth...joe

It was not Country Cl***ic Cars, From what I have heard it was A shop in a little town south of Champaign.

As far as the ***les go I heard that any thing pre 48 with an out of state ***le has to be inspected with a insurance bond,

On a car that you are building as said they want you to get it running and then get an appraisal and they want to see the reciepts so they can charge you tax on anything that you bought out of state (I beleive this is illeagal) and then they charge you tax on your appraised value so they are charging you tax on top of tax and then Taxing labor if they are taxing value.

I know a guy that is building a Fibergl*** 32 with new frame rails, He has it all together and running, He has all the reciepts and he got an appraisal from a dealer this was back in May He has been through the ringer with it.

He turned in all the paper work including the BOS and the Certificate of Orgin forthe body and the state had the stuff for a coupe months then he got a letter from them saying they are dening his Certificate of orgin and the bill of sale because it does not have a name on them where Downs sold them to him, This is after he paid the taxes on it and they accepted the stuff to bill him taxes.
It has been one thing after another and he is still not in any better shape now then he was when this all started just short a couple grand. And he is trying to do it the right way,

The Big problem that I see is that the left hand at the SOS does not know what the right hand is doing or saying, They need to have the guidelines set in stone so we all know what we need and what to do so it goes smoothly, I have no problem doing the right thing to get a car ***led but right now they have so many people scared because we do not know what we are getting into when you buy a car,

The NSRA told my buddy that they would like to get all the guys going through this with the State (The Legal way) and having problems together so they can hear what all of them have been told and gone through, Please Contact your Local NSRA REP so they can help us.

3 departments, first legal and the bonding. next desk: sos produce a ***le and come out and stamp your car give you a new vin. next desk, revenue, revenue will send you a bill for whatever they feel they can get, thats their nature, if you don't pay it immediately they start with interest, they send you to a collector almost instantly. If you owe them money they basically take away your right to exist, you can not renew your professional licenses or anything. If you have these you just about have to pay it and proof towards recovery. The first two are easy and separate, the last one, well hey we are never going to like them. One of the key things that hurts us is the BOS, how many have you ever bought a car directly in front of a notary? Well we need to, and save every receipt and they do make you pay tax on out of state parts, and used swap meet parts as well, check your Il tax form, it's a line item. Sneaky are they not? If you gave a 12 year old the right to ask for more money for candy and the right to impede your life if he did not get it he would eat candy till he was sick, just dog sick and make a huge mess, well, that's revenue. Oh and please don't flame on me over this, I'm just like you, I'm trying to flatten out one of my fellers so I can mail it to them.

I bought a car with a good Tennesee ***le back in the spring. I surrendered the ***le and paid big sales tax on what I paid for the car, I didn't try and cheat, every thing was by the book at the time. I got Illinois antique plates no problem. Fast forward 4 months and still no ***le, I finally asked. I was told Illinois is investigating EVERY pre-'48 ***le, even going back several years. The secretary of state investigator just sent me a packet of red tape I now have to walk through to get an Illinois ***le for my car. It starts with things like a certificate of origin from the builder where he has to do***ent where the major componenets were sourced from. Body, frame, suspension, engine, transmission, etc. I will have to get it appraised, inspected by State police, Bonded, and a whole litany of stuff.

    Ohh this really ****s!

Big Brother is alive and well in the peoples republic of Illinois.

What I don't get is if all the numbers match on the ***le & car/truck why in the hell are they making us get bonded ***les?? Sounds like someone in one of the state offices has a corn cob caught in their ***es for some reason.
It has basically became legalized extortion to license an older vehicle because someone believes all of our cars/trucks are illegal or has stolen parts on them...joe

I heard this morning from a regional NSRA authority that the state of Illinois bought a canned value guide (software) from Hemmings. Geez, they might as well use Barrett Jackson. Anyway, they suddenly saw many dollars in lost revenue because old cars are worth a lot more than previously thought. He said they are going to go back years and review old transactions as well and try and recopue their "losses". It's easy to hate an over zealous government.

The stupid thing is the state themselves set the sales tax at $25 for vehicles older then like 5-10yrs old  .
I guess my question would be is how in the hell they can legally make a tax retro-active to collect more taxes on something that they themselves set the tax rate at before making up this "NEW" rule????
That's a question I'd love to hear the answer to from the "Legal Department"........joe

They also set a tax maximum of 1800 dollars, then they say that they have the right to disregard that previous system. If BS was worth a penny a ton they would have trillions of dollars worth, and if they did I would hope they could pile it on themselves and breath through a straw from the center of that pile.
