Projects I'm 18 and building my first flathead 59AB+merc crank for my chopped 34 4 door sedan

Just found this thread. Glad to see the next generation take an interest in traditional hot rods. I picked up my C59A as well for $100 back in 2018. I was very lucky as it was already in pieces.

@Jesse Borba , you are seeking the right advise. I have a C59 flat motor that had historical significance down under unfortunately some one with no solid knowledge got it and attempted to pull it down . lets get a hole saw to cut around the vintage Edelbrock head studs ,yikes now we have 3/4” holes where the studs were. Ok now lets drill out the pistons , oops lets drill through the bore while we are at it . These sort of folk should not be allowed near power tools .

 

Yikes, I'm asking questions to avoid making an ass out of myself like whoever did that.

Just another welcome and wish you the best. There's a ton of info here on flatheads, read carefully!

 

What I do on a flat surface with a bit of the bolt/stud showing...
Use a grinder with a cup brush and get the nub shiny
Take a piece of flat bar , drill a hole near the end just undersize of the bolt/stud and tap it over it
Lay the weld in the center of the hole and work it outwards

Go away and do something for a few hours till everything is cooled down to air temp, then start wiggling the flat bar and get the bolt/stud moving. If it starts to bind up again, stop. Use your torch to heat the weld cherry red and work outwards again to the flat bar
Let it sit and cool again and go back to wiggling it free

I hate using nuts, because I’m a tight ass, I can clean a piece of rusty flat bar, inside the drilled hole will be shiny anyways

Weld a large washer on the end of that broken bolt/stud and then weld nut on that washer , let it cool
and it will come out easily. Washer is much easier to weld on that bolt remaining so that it will hold than nut.... just my 2 cents.

Hey kid, do you have a parts list yet? I'm sure you might get a couple donations if you just had a list of the things your flatty/34 need on the thread....

Just an idea 'cause I like helping fledgeling motorheads out. I'm 33, but it doesn't seem that long ago I was putting my first Flathead in my '40 sedan.

 

I'm not exactly sure yet with the 34 because I haven't really dug into it.

But with the Flathead I definitely will need water pumps, a distributor, and definitely some internal stuff but I don't want to go around asking for handouts.

Today I've been doing little stuff with the motor I took out the oil fitting in the side of the block, took a broken off oil pan bolt out of the block and took off the main caps just to check out the crank.

It's good to see a youngster liking flatheads. I hope you have a lot of fun along with some of the frustration you will encounter. Stay with it and you'll be proud of what you have done and will be one of the few that still work on these wonderful inventions. Good luck!

Just saw this thread myself. The good news for you is that YOU ARE LIVING IN FLATHEAD COUNTRY !! I am in Santa Rosa and have been fooling around with flatheads for years and there are a lot of us doing it. Come over to Coddingtown tomorrow (Sunday) morning and there is a cars and coffee. It's not often that I look to see where people are from on this site, since most are NOT where I am. I happened to be at the Coddingtown C&C last rainy Sunday. Good turnout for a crappy day. I thought it was awesome to see the two roadsters at the meet... My drive was wet enough. Can't imagine the drive up without a top!!!

 

Have a 34 pickup with a 283, wish it was a flathead.
