I'll have something for ya soon boys.

I've been spending too many weekends going to shows and parties. But fall is on it's way, Neil is back from Bonneville, and I'm itching to get stuff done.

Actually, while I have a bit of attention, I'll throw out a question:

Black frame or body coloured frame?

I'm planning on going with 1936 Ford Washington Blue, with a cream firewall and grill bars. I'm kind of digging on the body coloured frames (rails/cross members) with black bones, axles and brakes. Your thoughts?

Definitely paint the frame the same body color. It looks more like one complete matching car not like a bunch of different pieces.

Keep it cl***y and go with body colour.

Mines going to be black. My car won't have much cl***.

Thanks for the responses guys. Always nice to have a 'sounding board' when you're debating an idea in your head.

I hadn't really thought about it like that. I'll put that as one more tick in the Washington Blue frame category. :)

hahah, chrome sounds good! What's your address? ...Just wanted to know where I should send the bill! :D ;)

You don't need cl***, when you're going fast.

    Body color, of course!

Only if chrome wasn't so expensive..

I've done a bit of backtracking. The other rails that I had weren't working out for the look and build style that I was after. The decision was made to backtrack and start afresh with a set of stock reproductions.

    In other news:

I've been swayed fully towards a body coloured frame... Dave (NortonG) and I had been hashing it out on colours and ideas, and I think we've finally settled on a gentleman's accord that won't result in two of the same coloured rods popping up at roughly the same time.

My mind is also wandering away from the idea of lakes pipes. I still love them, and I will have a hotrod that has them. But for this truck, I'm starting to dig on a vibe that has a full hood and sides. Louvered, of course. But a hood and hood sides none the less. I'm going to have to start pulling up some pictures from the old magazines for reference.

A few weeks back I made a quick trip up to Wellesley Island. There's a shipping warehouse there, and they were holding onto my rails. A down and back across the border had them lying on the frame table at the Candy Factory.

Since then, Neil took some time to cut out the boxing plates and weld them into place. Here's how things looked prior to this weekend.

I was over at Candy's Hot Rod Supply yesterday to pitch in where I could. I wanted to get some hands-on experience on the process of setting up the frame and I wanted to get my hands dirty.

After squaring the frame up and tacking it to the table, we got the front crossmember trimmed and tacked into place. The crossmember is located 1.5" ahead of stock, increasing the wheelbase from 112" to 113.5"

Since I plan on running the mechanical fan, the extra length is going to give us a bit more room and will help to reduce the amount that the firewall has to be recessed.

With the front crossmember tacked in place, I wanted to see how it was going to locate the radiator/grill shell in relation to the frame horns (remember, the Yeakel roadster look is what I'm after). I think things are looking pretty good so far.

While I was working on the rear crossmember, Neil went ahead and finish welded the front crossmember.

The stock rear crossmember had been trimmed on the first go round. To make sure if fit properly between the rails, we made the decision to weld the trimmed ends back on. I cleaned it up, Neil rewelded, I recut, and it was tacked into place in the rear. The axle is being located by parallel ellipticals, so the crossmember isn't necessary. It won't be locating any buggy springs in the near future, but I wanted the ch***is to look fairly stock, and the crossmember will the mounting point for the rear spring hangers.

Next up will be engine/transmission placement and locating the x-frame. Stay tuned!

Thanks bud! The previous owner told me that it was whacked 4 inches. One of these days, I'll have to get some measurements on a stock cab to verify.

  22. this is going to be good! hopefully you'll make that already awesome hot rod
into something even better. and if you're thinking about more traditional stuff, talk to rikster, he's a "hotrodologist". he could tell you some really neat stuff.

    Thanks!

That's my plan, to make it even better. The basic build outline is in post 6 of this thread.

Thanks for taking a look and for the suggestion.

The Candy-Man got the chance to jump back on the frame again tonight.

The split wishbone brackets needed to be welded in place in order to get the front set back up. Everyone has their personal preference, but I really dig having the brackets under the frame, instead of having mounts in the frame rail itself. Just a styling choice.

The front hangers for the rear springs were also adjusted and tacked into place. The rear spring hangers still need to be cut out and welded onto the crossmember, so for now, the rear suspension is only partially in place.

Here's where things are at right now. It's finally starting to look like a ch***is again instead of just a pile of steel. It's amazing what Neil gets done having to lug stuff around in his one man shop.

I feel jipped! When I picked up my rails, there was most definitely not a cute redhead that came along with them. Damn. Maybe I had to order a whole frame to get her?

Thanks! If it comes out as I see it in my head, it'll be even cooler when it's done. And a hell of a lot faster :D

No fenders for this one Brent. Maybe the next project though ;)

Thanks! Though I can't take credit for any of it. All the craftsmanship thus far has been handled by Neil Candy outta Candy's Hot Rod Supply. :)

I agree Mark. It feels good to finally have some solid progress! I will have something to bring to the Hartman Bash next year. Or maybe two somethings.
