Projects Im getting Married! Project 46 ford begins!

  1. I have had dreams where the solution to an issue came up. Maybe it was in that state before I fully fell asleep or just woke up. BUT more than once I was able to find a "lost" part as well. I'd wake up and there it was, right where I left it.

Finally the mulch is gone! 80-90 loads in a wheel barrow, one car trailer stacked 3 ft deep and two SUV’s with the seats down and tarps laid out. It’s finally gone lmao. Got a brush pile to turn to ashes and then I can get the car out of the garage when I brilliantly figure this out lol

Ok quick sorta update, bought some replacement points for the distributor. Long ramble short I felt like I’d dusted the points with a failed capacitor and then by the time They were cleaned up they were to worn to function correctly

pulled them and found the spring was basically sprung IMG_5166.jpeg IMG_5165.jpeg in the car they were square but not even close out of the car. Sorry for the zoomed in fingers lol couldn’t get the camera to focus that small unless I held them.

the pads also are noticeably thinner than the new points.

down side is the points I got don’t clear IMG_5169.jpeg you can see the double nutted post on the new ones and it completely hits the inside of the distributor body. No room at all, the points I removed have a spade connector so way tighter.

when I looked up replacement points that aren’t Mallory they came up along with these IMG_5168.jpeg while I saw more people using the 2300 I thought the post would be easier to plug and play. Jokes on me, I guess I’ll exchange these for the 2300 and ether see how close the strap lands or swap the tiny spade connector for a ring.

the Malloy points are twice as much as the echlin and I hear a lot of complaints of the quality. And for the same price you could stick a petronix in it and be done. So I’ll give it another shot. Hopefully get those changed around this week.

I have a set of NOS Mallory points and condensor here if you think it will cure your Ill's . PM me if you want em. Lately Ive been rebuilding and recurving stock points type sbc distributors with pertronix II ignitors with no issues. Some I use to trigger MSD boxes.

What a journey, I'm being distracted by the desire to build a 46-8 sedan, I happen to know where there is a Tudor body for sale locally. But I know my kids will probably be out of home by the time I get there ...

I've picked up this thread at different times, but have just read it through. I love that you don't sugar coat the details. Thanks for your persistence, on the thread & on the car.

    About 500 likes! Haha

I very nearly bought a 46 4 door sedan a few years ago before buying our Ranch wagon, it had a '57 SBC but was going to be tricky getting it registered so I bailed. It would have been a cool ride...

@lumpy 63 shoot those look like the wrong style, thanks for digging for them though! I guess there are two different style Mallory dual points and they take different style points I discovered earlier this month.

They came out of an NOS Mallory 310 HP sbc distributor. Sorry they won't work for you....

  16. You know I happen to have a near mint gm points distributor with brand new pertronix with a brand new bug(parts store brand) and brand new AC Delco cap laying around right?

The reason your points don’t line up out of the car is they’re not on the locating pin. I really don’t think they’re a problem.

    @Oneball that makes enough since.

Ive run out of stuff to change and it’s got power to the points and no spark at the points. Got any ideas that aren’t the points?

Could still be points if the insulation has broken down. How about the insulator where the wire goes through the distributor body?

Have you got the points gap set right on both sets?

Get a multimeter and check for continuity between the baseplate and the engine block.

Power is clean through the body/ insulator, both sets are gapped correctly. Everything looks or at this point is brand new and tested. (Other than these points which I haven't replaced yet) I’ll check continuity from the base plate next chance I get thanks for the help.

While you’ve got the multimeter out it’s worth checking there’s no short to earth in the low tension side of the ignition system. You’ll need to stick something I insulated between the points

Alright so I’m waiting to test fit the new points, but here is a quick update.

I spent the last week of evening spare minutes with my multimeter and the 46 and tested every thing suggested and everything else I could come up with.

Everything tested like it should until I found a video of someone bench testing a set of points for continuity. That’s when I found it! … I
    Hope.

On the set I had already removed somewhere between the spade that the power wire connects to and the spring there is a short.
    IMG_5294.jpeg
Right in that stack of yellow and white insulators and rivet it goes awry.

best @porknbeaner and I can figure since the coil and capacitor tested bad before I replaced them, is the coil surged when it failed? Taking out the condensor and creating the short? This car has had a decent history of electrical dominoes when something fails so it makes enough since to me.

either way if these new points physically fit I’ll change the fittings to get power to them and we shall see.

At this point I’d be more surprised if it did fire up but I’m really feeling like we’ve got it this time.

Yeah I’ve really made a point to not replace anything that hasn’t tested bad first. This one was hiding for sure though. Hopefully this is the cure…. And then I’ll buy another set for the glove box
