Well you never know... Here in the western part of Canada driving distances tend to be long. Heck Ive driven 2-3 hours for breakfast!
Great thread. Amazing job finding parts, and buy low sell high financing. Thanks for taking the time to post progress and pics. Roadster is looking great!
The F1 box install is almost done. There's a little bit more to this task than I expected, but everyone I've spoken to who has done it, has said it is worth the effort. I have to make a spacer for the column drop for windshield-steering wheel clearance, shorten the steering shaft and tube, make a Tardel style shim, de-index the pitman arm lobes, machine the taper for the banjo steering wheel to fit, and adjust exhaust clearance. There's a bit in it! The complete steering column and box was a gift ! I started with a mock up, then cut a shim out of 3/4" aluminium plate from the salvage yard. I put my yard sale $5 mill/drill vice to work for the first time, it's definitely not fancy, or quick, but it did the job.
I had some time over the Christmas break to get a few things done on the roadster. Brake lines are done! The roadster has been on a couple of short maiden voyages, and I've been working out the bugs. I'm running too rich and have to make some adjustments to the carbs. At this stage I'm in the process of building a custom rag top using 30's hood bows I bought. I have the main structure roughed out and will chop it to suit when I get the chance. I've also had the time to work on the 32 coupe, which started as a $200 cowl. I made a boot skin, and put some louvres in this week.
I've been playing with both 32's for a while, and the roadster has been fowling plugs. I had good results with a "penrite hpr 50" oil and things went poorly immediately once I changed out my run in oil. I switched to a "penrite shelley" 30 weight and the engine started running poorly. I've switched back to the "hpr 50" and have ordered new plugs. I have a suspicion the fuel in the tank has gone off. I had the day off work today and had great expectations of doing a lap of the block, but it wasn't meant to be unfortunately. I'm not running a hooked up charging system at the moment, I'll check battery charge, but doubt that's the issue. I'm running an electronic distributor (e-fire), 37 flathead, I tuned and balanced the carbys on Sunday. Got a little frustrated with it today. I've added a photo of the "Squint & it's mint" 32 coupe just for fun.
I've had success, I replaced the plugs, changed oil and fired it up! It coughed spluttered, blew smoke then stopped. Then I checked my fuel level, and it was empty, so I'd been sucking up the varnish in the tank which explains a lot, haha! I put 20litres of fuel in, and it is now better than it ever has been, with the carbys tuned and balanced it seems much better. The brakes are at about 80 percent of where I'd like them, I've been doing shuttle runs in the yard, seating the shoes, adjusting shoes and bleeding lines, it's actually been a lot of fun ironing out the issues.
amazing transformation.... from rubbish to rubber burner!!! I dig the coupe... the cowl, doors, roof bits look steel are the rear 1/4s glass? are you planning to fill in the missing bits w metal '32 scraps? or glass the whole thing together? was that the frame on the roof of your suburban a couple pages back?...do you have a thread going? I love me a good "car from scraps" story!
Hi, thanks for the kind words. The 32 chassis rails are the ones I had on the racks of my ute. I don't have a build thread going for the coupe, it's just something I've cobbled together in the process of collecting parts for the roadster. The quarter panels that are on the coupe at the moment are glass, the rest is steel. I have a roof section I'll be getting soon, so I can make a little more progress on the body. I have a 32 heavy axle going under the coupe in the next few days, to replace the 34 axle. The engine I have in it at the moment is a 1941 flathead, with a three speed top loader 37-39 rear, wide 5's and 40 juice brakes all round. I've louvred the 34 commercial bonnet, and made a louvred deck lid skin for the coupe. It's been fun.
I sometimes refer to a couple of my projects as " Dollar Cost Averaged" get a piece or part when affordable.
