not up until recently, figure its the closest I'll get to owning a tig welder for a while, what are you welding?

  3. I have been doing sheetmetal work recently with a little jeweler's torch. It works great! So, no, you aren't the only one, haha!

I don't think most guy's know how plus with all the tig's, mig's and spool guns it just isn't applicable any more, produces way to much heat, but I do know a muffler man who still gas welds all his work.

gas weld a lot...my preferred way to weld sheetmetal panels.Quicker than a tig and nice and maleable so can file finish easier. I use mig for the structural stuff where plugging spot welds etc tho...check out my build thread! :D

Stainless I don't think is possible to gas weld but you can weld aluminum with a very low oxidizing flame

I have TIG and MIG Welding machines, and also my reliable gas welding set. I use all three but my favorite is gas welding, especially if I am replacing panels or small sheet sections on the body I am repairing. I was taught gas welding at a young age and after 35+ years of welding, I still feel comfortable using a torch. I would rather use a torch and hammer weld a panel than TIG. Just my .02 cents. :)

Gas is all I can afford. I did TIG aluminum bodywork for 14 years, but still haven't had a shot at TIGing steel. Too old to get my head around MIG welding, spitting out wire without controll is just beyond me. How about the old STICK arc welding, that must really date me.

I hammer welded the whole body on my rpu. Used almost two 5# rolls of tie wire.

Good comments 37Kid - I can relate. :) I first learned gas welding in my pre-teen years, stick arc welding in High school and saved up enough money to buy an old Lincoln 250 Arc/TIG machine. Finally "learned" MIG a few years ago - I still have problems getting the speed right. I try to stick with what I know best - gas, arc and TIG, which is similar to gas welding.

I have all 3 methods in my shop. There are times when each is appropriate, better, or less time consuming. Gas seems to be the most versatile, and gives the best results on sheet metal, when you can get to the backside...I DO cut out a lot of inner structure, to get a dolly back there!
The Tin Man, Kent White, has a lot of info on gas welding aluminum and stainless, and he is a firm believer that gas is superior to MIG and TIG on most projects. He sells fluxes, lenses, and videos on his website, as well as hand tools, and metal shaping machines.

I used to gas weld everything 30+ yrs. ago, but haven't had a gas welder until just recently, so I MIG'd everything. Now that I've got a gas setup again, I'll do some things with it if I can teach myself again!

Our old high-school shop cl*** actually had our own acytelene plant! We welded like crazy...I still use my torch for exhaust work and I'd love to buy one of those little body-work torch sets. The mig usually gets chosen for most of my welding jobs...especially frame work.

Where have all the wire coat hangers go----my wife's famous saying. I go through the closet every once in a while looking for high tech materials.

I welded all of my exhaust at my muffler shop for many years using the hangers that the uniforms came on. (got to keep the overhead down:D) I was in the back room and quite often the oil from the tubing would build up inside and ignite giving one hell of a back fire bringing everybody running. I use it often for carb linkages and any thing that I want to build up a pleasant fillet on. You can shape it like modeling clay.

I'm hunting for a Victor J28 torch handle right now for use on the body work on my projects. I have the mig for doing the structure and getting everything squared away but then I think I would rather go with what I am most comfortable with when I weld the panels up.

If I were still fabricating, I'd still use O/A to weld 4130.
Our ch***is used to cert just as good, if not better, than a lot of TIG jobs.
Machines used for welding have taken away an art.
