A professional photographer took photos of my truck at a car show. He put them up for sale on a public website. He did not ask permission to do this, nor did he offer to compensate me in anyway.
I demanded he remove the photos because I feel my truck is my canvas and is my art. When I threatened legal, he removed them. Although he claimed he had a right to sell them.

If you don't want people to see your vehicles, keep them locked up, or put a car cover on them.

And any of us car guys who say they've never pushed the limits of tressp***ing to look at a cool car is lying. :)

I think its kinda cool! If you notice, he offers to remove the pictures if its your car and you object to it being bloggified. I really dont see the problem. I'd be flattered.

Aint that the truth! Man, when I was a teenager I knew where/what EVERY thirties/forties car in every yard in my town was! I was constantly looking through/over/under fences and prowling back alleys.

It is polite to blur the plates out and have no location visible.

How about posting a sign on your truck at the next car show or cruise saying, "NO PICTURES UNLESS I GET PAID!". :D

Since your car was in a public venue the photographer was probably right that he didn't need your permission to photograph your car or compensate you for pictures he sold of it. Did you threaten legal action before you threatened him? I suspect your lawyer would tell you to keep your car in a closed garage if you didn't want anyone taking pictures of it.

I don't mind photos being taken.....just not to resell and make money off my hard work!

I actually encourage all the young kids to have their picture taken by their parents in and on the truck.

I am going to add a sign to declare:

    NO PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY
    without permission and compensation.

I always get a kick out of searching Google images for something and discovering one of my images that most likely was posted on the HAMB.:D I think that there is a way to copy write your pics with your name when you post them so that if copied you will be recognized. If some one else takes a picture I think you are out of luck. I take it as a compliment.

Man, I bet that just about ruined your whole day. And you think that was so cool you got to brag about it here? I don't think I'd be making references to other peoples IQ.

I had a friend in Seattle call me last year and tell me my OT Camaro was on the local CL for sale! I contacted the seller to "purchase" the car, but he must have gotten spooked, as he pulled the ad.
I'd have loved to get face to face with the dirtbag! Especially if I could have driven up in the car he was trying to sell!

  18. Sounds like some cases of paranoia to me. People are constantly snapping pics of my car where ever it's parked or even going down the road. Makes me feel good. All kinds of photographers post pictures of cars and post them on a site for sale. If I see one of mine that I like, I buy it. It ain't no deal to me.

that's funny. your truck is YOUR canvas and YOUR art. the photo is the photographers art. you lose. you have no photographic rights to your truck. people can take pictures and do whatever they want with them.

My thoughts exactly. If it's in plain sight and anyone can take a picture of it, then that's what is going to happen. No one here owns a copyright on the image of their car as it rolled off the ***embly line. And most of the custom builders want the publicity. I'll take it a step further; if someone shoots a photo of a white Merc at a car show and sells that image, oh well. How many Mercs were produced who's images have been sold in the past? The copyright is on the image, not it's content. Hell, if that were the case the government could start charging royalties for selling images of Yosemite. Anyone want that to happen? Next, I guess if I draw a cartoon from a photo that I took of someones car, can they stop me from selling it? We live in such a litigious society...do we really need image police to boot?

Any car guy that acts like a **** toward photographers when they show interest in their car enough to want to take a photo of it needs his teeth kicked in. If you are that guy, keep an eye out for me...I'm the 6'4" 330lb car guy wearing a Canon 5D around his neck taking photos of nice cars....

  21. What I fail to understand is this whole deal about license plates and VINs. So many people whine when they find someone has taken a pic of their plate. BIG DEAL!! Guess what, every time you open the garage door, your plate is on display to the entire world. What of it? Some will say,"Well, all they have to do is trace my number and come and steal my car." Not gonna happen. Even a LEO has to submit a compelling reason to obtain that info. You as a civilian, cannot trace anyone's license
    number.
Bikers, especially HD guys, guard their VINs as if they're the combinations to Fort Knox, yet they are also right there for all to see every time they park their bike. The argument is, someone will use my VIN to ***le a stolen, or otherwise, shady bike. Really??? Someone is going to take a VIN from a licensed, ***led, running, legal bike and try to use it???? Gee, that won't cause any red flags to pop up at the DMV, will it?
As far as being big and bad ***ed and knocking teeth out, one 9mm round took out Big Armond

Car guys are crazy. . . if a picture of their car pops up in magazine coverage of a show their car was at they say:

"No on asked MY permission! They're selling this magazine and making money off of MY car!"

Then if they open a magazine with coverage of a show their car was at, but there car isn't in the magazine they say:

"This magazine is bull sh*t! MY car was at this show and they didn't even put a picture of MY car in the magazine! They obviously don't know sh*t about cars, I was building hot rods before this writer was born! That's the last issue of this magazine I buy!"

    All crazy.

It's the "being hung with a new rope" syndrome. It isn't car guys, it's human nature. People aren't happy unless they have something to ***** about.

Yep, it appears that taking photos of cars sitting around is his thing. As long as he doesn't show where you live I don't see the issue. The only issue I would have with that is if he gives the location of where it is kept or shows too much of your home or shop in the photo so someone could figure out where it is kept. Cars that are on display at a business don't count in that though as in the case of crusty rustys sitting in front of some Southwest trading post.

I guess a guy could copyright his cars and be a real *** going after anyone who took a photo of them anywhere and shared it on the net or otherwise but that would mean he was a bit full of himself wouldn't it?

There is an issue if one lays claim to someone else's photos and attempts to profit from them as in printing copies and selling them or claiming them as your own work.
Photos that a photographer took himself like several of our pro or Semi Pro Hamb Photographers take and sell are the property of the photographer and not the car owner. I just purchased one of those a month ago of a photo I saw and liked on the HAMB and bought a print of the photo. In that case anyone printing out his own copy at home would have committed theft.

There would be a real problem if the Guy's site was 'Eyesores of Seattle that need to be cleaned up". Especially since quite often one guy's cool stuff is an other guy's eyesore that needs to be hidden or removed.

I don't mind folks takin pics of my Beulah [ while she was alive :( ]

or my Merc Amblewagon -- now that I'm drivin it --
    [IMG]

    but

it's annoyin & sometimes dangerous when they follow too close or pace me beside me to do it on the freeeway [ wish they wouldn't  ]

puts me & them at risk AND restricts my ability to make a sudden manuver should an incident come up -- this has happened many times -- and I've had to "go around" and come back to render aid -- sometimes seconds kin count in preventin a worse situation from developin
