Unfortunately, neither of these pic's does justice to this '56. My brother bought it from the original owner. It had a very nasty 292/4-spd combination, and was painted a dark green (by me) back in about '75, and it had a black vinyl top. He sold the critter to my wife, Nancy, and I painted it once more. This time in a metallic red with a white pearl top. She ended up selling it back to the original owner, back in about '90. He still owns it today. Sorry for the scratchy old pictures.... nancys.jpg Nancys 56.jpg

1957-58. The 59 is a totally different car.

the look was different but most parts suppliers lump the 3 years together.

  10. Well that makes it easier to categorize '50's Fords:
    Shoeboxes: ('49) '50, '51
    Tri-Fives: '52, '53, '54
    First Series Bi-Fives: '55, '56
    Second Series Bi-Fives: '57, '58
    Last-Five (Odd man out): '59

Yup, Chevies ARE easier to understand... Tri-Fives, and that's it!

How exactly is a 57 anything like the 55-56?

  12. Very simple, all three are made by Ford!

Seems we have been through the tri-five Ford deal multiple times in this thread. Since Jim @1stGrumpy started the thread and defined it as 55-57 Fords, that is what we are posting here and seems legit to me. I just happen to like all three, so appreciate this thread.

Then might as well include 58s, 59s, etc. 57 doesn't seem to have much in common with the other 2 years. Looks like it's just a thread trying to compete with the trip five Chevys that actually do share a lot in common.

I like this thread and check it every day. Thanks, Jim, for starting it. I love '55,'56 & '57 Fords and I can find all three right here!

I follow both threads. The tri-5 and 57-59 Ford. My year is the only year included in both.;)

  19. The '55-57 Chevies are grouped together as they're essentially the same car mechanically, just facelifted each year. Different enough from their earlier/later brothers that there's much less parts interchange.

Use the same 'rules' for the Fords of the era and you'd get this grouping....

'49-53: Ladder frames, flathead V8s, rear sump oil pans, and kingpin front suspension.
'54-56: Same ladder frames, but now have OHV V8s, front sump pans and upgraded ball joint front suspensions.
'57-59: New perimeter frame, first use of the now-famous 9", and completely redesigned front suspension.

The '60-64 cars can also be grouped together and are basically a continuation of the '57-59 basic designs, but due to the now-larger size of the cars there's little interchange with the earlier cars.

  20. Good grouping, but I just can't call a '53 a "Shoebox"!

  21. I wasn't trying to say that the 55, 56 and 57 are all the same platform, it was merely a reference to those three years! So.... there really isn't a need to hash this out again, o.k.?
