Remember when we had to drive through the Arbuckle Mountains to get to Dallas. Palacine is the name of the oil company. that had the gift shop at Turner Falls. Lookout. a long time ago.

Here is an early photo of three young ladies at the West End Service Station, Edwardsville, Illinois on Route 66. From left to right are Mary Simons, Eileen Kleuter, and Virginia Abendroth. Just a block away from the new Edwardsville High School, the station was a handy spot for teenagers to stop for a cold soda.
In 1927, Springer's Madison County Oil Company established a service station on the northeast corner of St. Louis and West Streets in a residential neighborhood that included some of the finest homes in Edwardsville. Henry J. Springer, Jr. operated the new station. The small building was constructed of red brick and was set at an angle facing the intersection. It was designed and constructed in the house-with-canopy style typical of the 1930s. The station featured Texaco petroleum products.
Robert L. Smith and Ralph Ladd formed a partnership in 1936 and took over the station on April 16 of that year. Renamed the West End Service Station, its operators boasted new improvements and a new line of products. According to a local newspaper article, a “new, modern hydraulic hoist” and a “complete air pressure lubrication system” were installed. “The new hoist assures a complete and thorough greasing and oiling job on all types of machines,” the article went on to say. Brand name products featured at the station were now Mobil gas, oil, and grease, plus Socony vacuum products and “other specialties.”

This real photo postcard of the Marathon filling station and rock shop on old Route 66 in Commerce, Oklahoma was originally a Marathon station built in 1927 by Roy Cowherd and owned by Jim Mullen. In the 1930s, it was bought by Loren and Grace Broyles and had various names and appearances. They added soft serve in 1951. The business changed hands again before Treva and Kenneth Duboise purchased it in 1980. After his father’s death, Charles decided to partner with his mother to run Dairy King.
They are still in business. It is at 100 N Main St. Commerce. Located on the west side of Main Street, just across the road from the "Hole in the Wall" gas station. It is a good example of a building that has been restored and converted to a new purpose while preserving its historical Route 66 vintage appearance. In the past it sold gasoline of Marathon Gas company, and was also a Tydol station. Its style is that of a cottage. The current building has a red gabled roof and a flat canopy on the front of the building. A large neon light ice cream cone decorates the front sector under its roof. Gas6.jpg

The building is still there, and so are the pay telescopes along the wall.
