I'm looking for info to use an import alt. in a generator case, anyone know whats involved in doing this? Thanks, Dan
this post pops up once in awhile & it seems to be a very impractical thing, i guess the alt run too hot to be enclosed & no one really knew how its done or who does it. Jim
I'm looking to do this for/with my Dad's genny. We looked to the Mitsu late model units... but ended up going with a new unit from Powermaster which is the same thing(because I sell them) The alternator body is under 4" in diameter. With some subtle machining, it should slide right it. The guys at Powermaster say that the particular alternator has an internal fan in front and in the rear of the unit. It should keep its cool, but I think some cooling holes would be a good idea... We are doing ours a little different... we have a 4 1/2" aluminum sleeve of about 1/8" thick material. We will be using that instead of the generator housing for cooling purposes. I will be doing a tech post about it when we get to it. FWIW... here is the thread they were talking about: Takealooksee
Thirdyfivepickup, Thanks for the link, I guess I did'nt use enough keywords. What is the powermaster unit you sell?
Someone could make a lot of money making a replica generator case for an alternator. You could probably put a 12v fan in the back of the case for extra cooling also.
The guy that rebuilds all my stuff showed me a unit that LOOKS like a generator, but is actually an ALTERNATOR. It's a bit bigger (diam.) than an old Ford generator and just a little longer.(has a fan inside the rear of the housing, with lots of openings at the front for cooling) He says they were used on Land Rovers and made by Bosch in the early '70's. They were supposed to output 40 - 50 amps. Any UK guys that can throw some light on this??
My Dad's old friend said something about Corvairs having an alternator that looks like a generator also... once he decided to do the swap, he stopped looking. I'm planning on using the 8062 (I think thats the number) from Powermaster. Its 50 amps and has the internal fans front and rear. I think any of the Mitsubishi alternators are the same case. Just don't quote me on it...
[ QUOTE ] My Dad's old friend said something about Corvairs having an alternator that looks like a generator also... [/ QUOTE ] i was at the junkyard with a friend getting parts off a greenbriar corvan, the alternator looked just like any other, except the mounts were a little different.tell you what, you send me a generator and the smallest alternator you can find and i'll do my damnedest to make it work, just so we can put this theory to the test once and for all-george
