  2. Hook up the toggle. It’ll probably make the gauge wiggle some.

no one would know the difference

Interupt the lead between coil and point set
creating open circuit, same as slipping a piece of paper between the points.

In it's simplest form, a dwell meter is just a voltmeter with a capacitor in parallel and a resistor in series with it. The resistor is sized to limit the voltage based on the deflection of the meter movement, and the capacitor buffers the pulses of voltage from the coil when the points are open so the meter doesn't bounce with each opening of the points, and "averages" the voltage pulses into a fairly steady value. Maybe a zener diode in parallel also to provide a bit of meter protection from excessive voltage spikes.

Ignore the stuff behind the red X in the diagram below. Those are components for the tach portion of the circuit.

...which would require both sets of points to have separate conductors coming out of the body of the distributor. That's not how they are built, but I suppose you could modify a dual point distributor to be that way if desired. I am including an image of a dual point distributor so you can see how they are typically wired. Dual Point.jpg

    Forgive my caveman scribbling,
But yes you would need to move some wires around and have a specific type of switch but this in it's simplest form is what I envision

Looks like it could be the same make. Don’t have anything currently running with points to try it out, although I’m sure there is other ways to test it. I grabbed it because it was unique, plus the Hollywood panel has a lot of gauges and I needed something else to fill one spot.

that gauge does not exist or we would find another one in Google Images. must be photoshop. if I were at my home computer I could make it into a fart meter in about 10 seconds

That would be just the thing for my car. I could point to the gauge and say to my passenger, "Look what you just did!"

  12. A tach/dwell meter is the same instrument with different settings so seems like a small tach could be re-faced and set up for a dwell meter.

While looking for gauge images, came across this panel used on a boat that I thought was pretty cool
for a hot rod. Under $100 on ebay....

If I were to go to the trouble to photoshop it, it would have been a “Fun Meter”.

If I am not mistaken that is the dashboard of Joe Bailon's 1942 Chev custom "miss elegance"

    You know it, Mark.
No other dashboard quite like it in the whole world. I wonder if it has a dwell meter.

I separated the points lead added another condenser then a switch by the shifter, used it for high gear retard.

This must have been a Driver's Ed training car for high school kids, or an early United airlines pilot training
    cockpit.....wow! Pretty impressive...

  24. I asked Moriarty if this was what he was looking for...apparently not (I missed April 1 by a few days :D).

Is it just me or did Anthony Myrick get almost a dozen serious replies to a joke question?
