    Hello all
I'm still learning a lot about metal shaping and I'm in need of some advice on how to increase the radius of a spare tire ring I want to use as cycle fenders. As the pictures show the fender is not quite large enough to drop over the wheel. Any advice for a newbie to make this thing fit?
    Thanks for any help

I believe you need to stretch the vertical side parts, so the big flat horizontal part will curve less.

You might be better off to just buy some spare tire rings for larger diameter tires like you have on the back of your roadster, and use these spare tire rings on your smaller front tires.

  4. Pick up a set of shrinker stretchers....will take about 10 minutes and you'll be set. Harbour Freight has them for about $140.

A common problem in the motorcycle world. In a nutshell pressing on the sides of the fender makes the radius larger and spreading the insides of the fender makes it narrower.
Go ahead and walk around the fender compressing it 1/4" at 1" intervals and you will find the fender now has a larger radius. To undo the compression and widening you use two 2x4s with a tall socket in between as a pivot point and spread the sides apart like a reverse pair of pliers so to say.
    Hope this helps.

If the edge of the fender is folded or doubled, he's gonna have a hard time with any of these suggestions.

  8. I know. Who wants to read about metal shaping and cycle fenders when there are Divcos, COEs and hot rod Nashes that need to be discussed

  9. Just put a piece of 2x2 on the front and back of the tire and smush it down. ;)

I think a lot of guys bob it for just that reason, other than aesthetics it doesn't need to hang over the back side of the tire.

Thanks guys for the ideals. I ended up using the stretcher on the out side edges and the 2x4 ideal. Now it's sitting better like I said I'm a mechanic so the fabrication and metal shaping is a new challenge for me but the learning is fun. I will need to decide on final size and mounting but at least I know these will work.
