Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by primeisnotacrime, Aug 21, 2014.

  1. run the vin# and see if you can find person who owns truck from 1980.

  2. The owner grew up in Kentucky but has lived here in Minnesota for 50+ years he even still has his southern accent!.The truck was titled and owned by him here. It's been a Minnesota truck it's whole life.

  3. Good to know..

  5. wait.....it's in your area.....didn't go look at it....gave a low ball bid.....put 500.00 down and took the truck....which looks like a 5 grand 40/41 Ford truck.....doesn't sound like it's worth the popcorn....

Besides Connecticut what other states don't have to put up with Title crap on cars over 20 years old? Bob

  7. God's honest truth! It's how it all went/is going down, no embellishment. As I was talking to the owner he had the phone on him and got 2 more phone calls on the truck as I'm standing there. I hear him say "Nope, just sold it." The sun does shine on a dog's ass once in a while;):).

Man, you just got the truck, the seller is up to his eyeballs in a big move, and everyone is giving you advise on getting a title out from under him already . Its a way of doing things if he doesn't come back, but honestly, give the guy the guy a chance, and keep yourself out of trouble too. Be a stand up guy. I've bought a lot of cars on a handshake and a promise, and sold a few too. Sit on it, if he doesn't contact you in a year, then you "Might" consider it an abandoned truck, at that point. Hell, I've sat on projects longer than that. I'm getting ready to sell an OT 67 El Camino I've had 12 years. No title, but from a good friend I trust implicitly. I will title it before I sell it to keep myself clear.

Whats with this incognito secret agent crap? If the deal is on the up and up, whats the harm in knowing who and where you are? Secondly if he does find it or he gets a new "lost" title, where is he going to mail it too?

    WTF

Give the man a chance, he's got a lot going on. I would stay in contact until this is resolved, that fellow would be my new best friend. Also you do not want to alienate that guy or give him a reason to end contact. Honestly, I think you are heading that way with this, hide the truck stuff. Be honest and up front, patient and remember more flies are caught with sugar than with vinegar.

    Best advice...IMHO

  11. It makes sense, I can't think of a car I've ever bought where the seller had a clue where I lived. Including the O/T van I bought last month.

If the guy can't be contacted and never comes up with it, I'd look into the mechanic's lien route or something along those lines.

Also, someone asked about no-title states; CT, VT, NY, AL and GA that I am aware of, all with their own varying rules and regulations. Could be others.

  15. I understand the circumstances. I'm honest to a fault, and some guys would've paid the $500 and drove off and never made contact again, knowing the owner is moving out of state. I couldn't do that to him. He's a nice old guy and we've got a lot of similar interests and get along real well, but I don't want the situation of losing contact with him and it never gets resolved because he's out of state to affect the sale. I would rather have the title, trust me it's a nightmare to get a bonded title here and I'd rather not go through that process once again. The truck is worth more with the title, especially if it's current, well 34 years old..I've unfortunately been dealing with the meth-head son instead on the truck and haven't seen the old man since last Saturday. The situation is constantly changing due to the old man not being in the picture lately, the son isn't very reliable, trustworthy so that's been a concern also..If I lose contact with the son, I'm pretty much SOL.

Im with Studebaker Eric and F-One on this one . Give it some time .the guy just moved a cross the nation...Last week! Im sure he has alot on his plate. What would axle rose do?

  19. Axel Rose would sing a song about it being too busy to deal with it.

  20. UPDATE:

Got the title after running around in circles, then bee-line to the DMV to transfer the title. Come to find out, when he applied for a title in '80 he got it in a 1 ton class, the truck is a 1/2 ton. I guess I should've expected more complications at the DMV after finally getting the title. They said it also had collector plates applied for at the same time, plates which I didn't get with the sale. The DMV said I could just get duplicate plates if I left it in the collector class. All said and done total sale price $1800.

    Whew!!! Good deal!!
I wasn't too concerned about this story until you mentioned having to deal with his "Meth head son". You can never get a straight story from a tweeker!!! Good thing you didn't hand HIM any cash......Did you?
