I just aquired a early flathead powered skid pump. It was built by Maxim Motor company in M***achussets. Maxim builds fire trucks and equipment. It has 81A stamped on the cylinder heads and appears to be of the 38 to early 40s vintage. It looks to be 100% complete and is not stuck. I am going to try to get it running soon. I would like to use it in my 29 sedan project but had concerns with the bell housing pattern as I would like to run a 3 speed behind it. Will this bolt up to an automotive Trans? Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure you have a 1942 Ford engine. 221 cubic inch

20 odd years ago there was a guy in British Columbia making new repro 34 Ford roadsters using industrial flatheads he bought from Ford. They stopped making car and truck engines but you could still buy industrial engines.

So yes, you can use an industrial engine in place of a car engine. I don't know what Ford did to theirs, but they may have had heavy duty bearings, pistons and valves and a very mild cam.

The offset generator will be handy if you put on multiple carburetors.

It will be a 38 to 42 ford of 221 cubes. We had an auxiliary fire pump motor which was a 39 merc , just relieved it of the fire pump and cradle bolted up the correct clutch and Pressure plate to the flywheel and fitted a stock 3 speed box. We were good to go. You should be the same.

Excellent news. You guys are a wealth of knowledge. Thanks for everyone's input. Maybe I'll get some video of it running in the next few weeks.

  10. Once upon a time, there used to be many Industrial Ford engines around here on farm Irrigation pumps, then they started disappearing within the last 20 years or so.
