A few months ago, I went out to Tennessee to check in on my good pal Corky Coker. Half-way through the shop tour Corky stopp...

To read the rest of this blog entry from The Jalopy Journal, click here.
I know of a few truck accessory wheels that could use a new pair of those 18's... Exciting news for sure!
Beautifull... Will there be a narrower 16"? ( like a 6.00-16 ) Those would look great on my Roadster.
WOW! What I would give to hang out with that man. He could teach me a few things about the tire buisness. I really enjoyed the time line in the new Coker catalog. What else was on the rack? Cody
We owe a debt of gra***ude to Coker for putting his *** out there and developing this stuff. Its easy to ***** and wail when we have a tire failure, but without someone like Corky we wouldn't have **** for cool rubber. I was gonna get my new tires locally, but this convinced me that I should support the guys like Coker who are working hard for us.
I need to get them on the horn and go for a set of the 8.00 x 18's like yesterday.....any spec's on them ie...tread width and height? Walking towards the phone now!
i hope they can find a way to make some speed rated ones to run at bonneville that would sure light a fire for people to build more traditional cars to run! I'm keeping my eye's open for them!
Man, a set of those on the wheels that are also being repoped would sure do the trick for my roadster, but the tires, wheels and knock-off hubs are nearly 5 grand!
We collectively have hammered Coker in past years on the HAMB. Corky has stepped up, listened and overall performed at a level of business that is rare to see these days. Thank you Mr Coker!
The Goodyear Land Speed Tires are made in the same mold that the Front Runner drag tires are made in. The difference is in the numbers of side wall plys and compounding. I sure hope this works out for another source for speed rated tires. They Goodyears go for about $400.00 each, so there might be enough $$$$ on the table to make it worth while----I SURE HOPE SO
Glad to see us get the green light to talk about this! Zakiras Garage and I have been working with Coker for a year and a half on this. Zakira's contacted me and said they had talked with coker and they said they would look in to it two years ago.. in the mean time the more calls requesting the tires that Coker gets.. the better. So Zakira's and I started making calls to people with old race cars with these types of tires and encouraging them to call. A BIG HELP was a call Coker got from Jimmy Shine and the guys at SO CAL who were looking at 4 or 5 cars that needed new rubber.. the belly tanker and the coupe were two.. So Cal said they would buy them as soon as they were availble... THE BAD NEWS IS!! Despite Zakira's Begs and Pleas for a 200 MPH speed rated tire.. They will not be. But, zakira's said it best.. "We'll just let you crazy hot rodders run em at boneville and test em' out for us" I'm sure that will happen! as these tires found there way to B ville regularly. Thanks Corky. Joshua Shaw
What are the specs? Did anyone ever run these on a hot rod? Or are they basically for your open wheel race car? Big thanks to Coker for continually making vintage tires.
You bet guys ran these, maybe not on the street though......look at all the old dry lakes and Bonneville pics. Many hotrods and bellytanks using old Indy tires, as the speeds increased, regular tires were coming apart.....
I don't believe that phrase means "static display". I'm sure a call to Coker would result in response along the lines of "suitable for use on vintage race cars that are not driven in a compe***ive manner." They might put a disclaimer on really high speed usage but most of the D.O.T. rated tires that are not "Speed rated" probably carry that same disclaimer. Most of the old bias ply **** we drove on for years had neither a D.O.T. nor a Speed raring and we normally drove them as fast as the car would go.
Here is some info on the Firestone Indy Roaster tires: We are initially going to have two sizes available a 7.60-16 and a 8.00-18. The 7.60-16 will be about 29.75 in diameter and 7.5 in cross section. The 8.00-18 will be about 31.25 in diameter and 8.5 in cross section. They will not be DOT approved (they werent originally either). We are accepting backorders so if you think you want them give us a call. From dim memories from the early '60's, the last days of the Indy Roadsters, Bonneville rules for cl***es below a speed I can't remember simply required "Racing Tires" from presumably any venue. The Indy tires were fairly readily available in reasonable sizes for hotrods and were heavily used.
