Hi all - I’ve been very slowly do***enting my build -

    https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/modern-greenhorn’s-‘28-coupe-build.1160818/

I had planned on a tardel style ‘50s traditional build - 32 k member, 39 top loader, swan shifter ...

Am currently learning through a 51 8ba and it seems to be going well

in my other posts I had asked opinions on a period Borg-Warner Od to put behind the 8ba - and if I could somehow marry it to the earlier top loader / shifter

my buddy recently gave me the option of this early Hurst dual gate syncro - leaflet is dated ‘62 - and it appears all there save 3 bolts, 3 nuts and 2 ‘spirol pins’? (are those hard to find?) ... not sure if the black knob Is correct - it won’t thread to stick - stick is narrower - maybe there was an insert? (he also had a mystery shifter or two - the white knob in my avatar may be the one that came w this kit?)

the shifter looks a bit longer and straighter than in the instructions too - where there a couple variations on this model?

I did search the h.a.m.b. for hurst info and there was a lot !

hoping someone can advise - as this kit is for the 40-48 ford engines ... IF I want to use with the Borg Warner I have and my 51 engine with It’s different bell housing - will I still be able to do so - likely with a different bracket piece than the one in this kit?

and opinions please on where shifter will end up - I’m 6’ and was told this set up will have the shifter crammed against my knee where the top loader and swan will be located much better?

and lastly the page references another shifter instruction page describing parts #1 through 8 - hoping somebody has that page and can post it as well!

as I’ve said before and I’m sure you can tell - very new to all this so very much value the ability to reach out to others experienced and in the know here - thanks in advance! I’m really liking this shifter and would like to include it in my build if I can work it all out

I would think you would be better off finding a shifter and kit made for the trans you are using. By the time you were done, you would have to have made a new bracket, rods, probably shift arms, etc. The shift lever will come out close to left; but a lot of guys made them work that way.

I'm using a sincro/loc on a B/W overdrive 48 Lincoln trans. in the project I have been building. I made all the linage and the mount for the shifter to locate it in the middle of the floor, for two reasons, first as you said I'm 6' tall also and didn't want the shifter rubbing my leg, second I wanted the shifter to look like it was in a stock location. Here is a picture of the linkage nightmare I made for it. If you look at my albums [ v12 Lincoln] there are a few other pictures.

@two couped up I'm impressed with your "out side the box" solution to a problem, nicely done!!

  5. I bought a Hurst 3 speed shifter in 1962 for my 61 Ford Starliner BW Overdrive trans from
Honest Charley in Tenn. It came with a Plain Black Knob (no shift pattern ) .Later I bought
a Plain white Hurst knob (no logo or shift pattern). This is how I remember them. I still
have both of the knobs (removed to use a Hurst T handle that is long gone along with a
Hurst shifter glove) Brain is full of useless information!!!!!JERRY

The problem for me was getting the shifter arms around the OD solenoid AND keeping the floor shifter location close to enough to use the existing hole in the floor. I had to fabricate the mount and arms, but the end result worked.
