Was scraping off 40-60 yrs of grit and grim from my motor yesterday and came across this tag on the front of the block. It says it was bored .040 over. How much can you bore on a Merc block before you can't go any more? Any ideas what the other printed numbers mean and the corresponding stamps of "010"? Any help appreciated. Thanx.
Suggest you take this question over to the FordBarn and make sure you put in the year or type of engine, 59A or 8BA.
It depends on the amount of core shift that took place during the casting of the block I think 3 3/8 in. (from the stock 3 5/16) is about the max. Past that and the walls get pretty thin, but I guess you could sleeve it and go more. But "More" equals "More Heat".
6303 is the basic part number for a crankshaft, 6211 is rod bearings, 6331, 6333 are main bearings. The tag is telling you the block is bored .040 o/s, the rods and mains are cut .010 u/s. I have seen some of these old tags from Fred Jones in Ok City too. Not sure how many rebuilders there were back then, I know GPD (Genuine Part Depot) was the rebuilder in the LA area.
"Meyers & Welch" were also a authorized rebuilder, Ford , Lincoln & Mercury. Usually painted dark green.
