So for one of you guys that actually brew biodiesel...does it give off fumes as you cook it? I was under the impression that it is cooked in a sealed vessel and didn't give off fumes.
As for being an illegal fuel...I guess I would take my chances ...can't be a follower forever!
Oh yea can you mix it right in with regular diesel?

  2. Why would anybody want a motor that stinks, and sounds like it's full of rocks...in anything.

  3. NON-INTERCOOLED??? That's too much...

Seriously, why a 6?? I drive a Cummins four every day (Wonder bread truck), and that thing is as peppy as you'd want, truck moves out REAL good, and we only have four speeds in 'em. Gearing is THE key, as they run out of revs pretty quick. Keep in mind, bread truck are fair heavy (7-8000#), so to move like it does, she's got torque!!

But you gotta intercool it, you just gotta...

    I just remembered something...

Propane works just like nitrous on a diesel... and you can run nitrous too. Nitrous + propane + turbo. You could actually go find an old GM diesel with a 6-71/8-71 on the side... but you'd lose some ponies over the late model stuff.

If its going into a pickup, I think a big ol chrome stack out the side is worth doing. But since its a roadster, run em down the bed rails!

Of course a P51 mustang type exhaust would work too... just some little slash cut pipes dumping right out the side. I'd just want it exhausting back behind you, diesel can get awful stinky under the right conditions!

The other thing that comes to mind... is that some of the big diesels have an aftermarket following, and end up in the 500hp 1000lbs of torque range! Good lawd almighty you could make a rod move with that.

I wonder if you could find a tranny out of a tractor that would bolt up to the motor without any adapters and what not. Might save some bucks there... 'course you'd want to work it over as they tend to be notchy... and non-synchro. Wonder what all the tractor pull guys run?

A jake brake, and putting an unmuffled 20:1 compression out the stack would sound oh so sweet. Clanking, banging, and blowing streak of jet black ... oh yeah!

    Yeah, you gotta build it.

I put a 12 valve cummins in my 94 chevy truck,I'll get some dimensions from it,get my graph paper out and do some scale mock up drawings to see where everything will be.
Maybe one of the photoshop wiz kids can paste a cummins engine onto a pic of a 28 roadster pick-up for me.

Now I must go and take my meds before the men in white coats get here.

I had a similar thought, but I was going to put my turbodiesel in a Diamond T, or a late 40's Powerwagon.

I ran across this discussion while looking for something else and thought I'd toss my 2 cents out. I'm thinking a 4cyl. Isuzu would be a good cheap light rod diesel w/5 speed. You can actually run an older diesel on straight veggy oil with a few modifications(separate tank & pre-heat before injection & start on regular diesel) for those that don't know Diesel, the inventer, built the engine to run on peanut oil-- after his death the oil companies decided to figure out how to use oil based diesel so we could pay more instead of growing our own"Bio-diesel" ! I think you can make 500 gal. a year but have to pay 25 cents a gal. tax after that. The bio-diesel can be used like regular diesel but will thicken in cold weather without regular diesel mixed into it.It doesn't smell like french fries if converted to bio-diesel correctly. Just wanted to toss some info on the pile & I will not swear to this info but, I have done a bunch of checking on the subject and these are things I've found. Anyone with corrections or other info---I'm always open to knowledge, that's how we learn.;)

I think it would be pretty badass. Way better gas mileage, they dont looks all that high tech, make gobs of power, and you get 25+ MPG. If these engines can make a 6,000 pound truck pull low 13's, high 12's with just a chip, It would be down right dangerous in a 2,000 pound car. [IMG]

  11. It's funny, I told Fat Hack this very thing 3 years ago, and we both agreed I should get the doctor to change my scripts. :D

But I bet that B Cummins woulda flat kicked that 2.8's ass in my old Fleetline.;)

I run a Nissan 6 diesel in my 740 Volvo estate , works great . But they have just brought in diesel emissions testing in mot tests here. I plan on putting it into my 62 Biscayne they do not test anything older than 1979 .

  14. Why not put a 4 cyl Volks diesel in your A? I stripped an early 80's AMC Spirit recently that had a Volks-Audi 4 banger in it with a 4 speed and rear wheel drive. My buddy who knows gas and diesel Volks's inside and out snapped up the bell and tranny for a garden tractor project he's building. Says it wouldn't take much to get an older Jetta engine to fit - pretty much a bolt-in.

There are literally dozens of very good small 4 cylinder diesels available in Europe, due to the fact that just about every passenger car on the market has available diesel engines. For a Model A, a four cylinder, or a V6 would fit best. The European rear wheel drive manufacturers are BMW, Mercedes and Volvo. All manufacture 4 cylinder Turbo intercooled diesels with five and six speed manual transmissions. For the price of a used Cummins you could buy a complete 2.0 liter 2006 BMW diesel four, with a 6 speed transmission, which produces 163 HP with a potential 200hp if you chip it.

Try looking on the web for large Auto dismantlers in England. The advantages of looking in England are twofold. Firstly you'll understand them! and secondly, due to the laws in Great Britain regarding accident damaged cars, late model write-offs are only allowing to be dismantled by authorized dismantlers. On mainland Europe the values of late model write offs are over inflated due to ringing.

Before you start using some crude old technology consider this: Diesel technology has improved more in the last 20 years than it did in the time up til then.
