Is your Hourning/Fisher head iron or alunimum? Do you have the cam for it? If anyone interested in inline engines is not a member of Inliners International they should get themselves over to www. inliners.org and check it out. Lots of GMC and other information there. A neat bi-monthly newsletter. BBQ at the Wendevor KOA during Speed Week. Some drag meets. Local chapters. traditional hot rods. Try it-you'll like it.

I know about the Wayne head as my father, the late Harry L Warner, was the manufacturer. Actually, the Spaulding Bros roadster was known as the 9 day wonder, a little short of the weeks noted in the other post. Or, was it the Johnny Hartman roadster? Now I'm confused.

Don Ferguson III had the 300 MPH exit speed at Speedweek last year. He was using an original Wayne head. The Ferguson family have access to all the 12 ports that were produced by the various manufacturers including their own design.

    Tuck,

    Thanks for remebering the Wayne.

Dan, Who was the Wayne head named after? That catalog cover I posted is dated January 1, 1949. If you have any history on the Wayne, years of manufacture, total amount of heads produced etc. it would nice to know. Bob

I'm not Dan but I beleive the head was named after Wayne Horning. I could be wrong; I was once before. .....Bob

I am sure Dan will answer that the Wayne head was named for Wayne Horning who designed and made it for a while, as I heard it. Mr. Horning then went on to make the Horning head, which became the Fisher head and later was made by Charlie Baker. Now If I can get a firm answer concerning my flywheel shield I'll be a happy guy.

That was quick! As a history nut getting all this info out to the masses is important. Bob

The Wayne GMC head patterens were modified by Howard Johanson to angle the intake ports much like the Wayne 216 Chevy head. That head became the Howard head which is now the Arias head. These heads have no combustion chambers much like a 409 Chevy. This allows a shorter, lighter piston, and better ring placement to the wrist pin without requiring special rods. All these heads allowed the use of stock reground cams. The Horning head had a cast in combustion chamber, and required a cam ground from a round billet. Horning heads were cast iron. California Bill Fisher cast his version in aluminum

  10. So is there any issue with running one of the new cast Wayne heads on the
    street.
Does anybody have any experience with the new ones.

Rich has the basic history correct. There is an in depth story on the Inliners website.

Rich, I'll reread your scattershield question again today. I don't know why Lee would suggest that keeping parts off the race track is not an issue.

  14. Used to race against some big nasty Jimmy's . . . some with 12-Port Horning heads and a mess of carbs. Really had a nice sound and ran very well.

Pat's '32 highboy with the Wayne Chevy was just as bitch'n. That car was bought out of the line while driving into the LA Roadsters Father's day show a few years ago.

  19. Check out this 38 that runs at Bonneville. I believe I read that it's a 200+ MPH Car.

what did those FLYNN side drafts come off of? or were they aftermarket?

  22. Correction... I don't know where I got the idea that this was a 200+ MPH car... I looked up the official Speed week results and it ran in the 130-140 range.
