Hey guys, I started getting ready to take the body off my frame. Both side inner rocker panels are shot along with some of the brace ends. I have some extra good braces from my parts car. I've never done anything like this before and looking for some advice. This is how I thought I would do it- please correct me if i'm wrong or have anything positive to add. I was going to remove the outer section of the floors 1 side at a time maybe 4" or so where it's rusted, replace the inner rockers, repair the braces than patch back in the floor. I'm adding in braces across the inside of the car after I get the body square, the car has been sagging over the frame with the rusted floors and inner rockers. The floors themselves just needs patched in a few places. Thanks, Bill
Hey Bill, How's the fit of the doors in their openings? You mentioned "sagging" over the frame, does this extend to the upper part of the body? I'd brace the openings well, once the doors are squared, cross brace the B posts and remove the supports, floors and rockers as necessary. If you've braced the squared body well, removal of the bad metal, for replacement with good metal, should be fairly problem-free job. Go slow, measure well, and watch heat build up, when welding. The doors fit fine , by sagging I meant that since the inner rockers are gone, the floor is up against the top of whats there. I raised the body slightly off the frame so everything could level out, I cant support the center section of the car or the supports will push the floor up to high. Right now it supported at the front body mount on the firewall and the rear with the trunk hinge supports - the trunk is already cut out.
Support it at your firewall mounts, like you have, and at the rear body mount just ahead of the rear wheel opening. Hopefully the rear mount is still there???? You might also have to do some temporary repairs before it comes off the frame. Maybe if you have a chance look at the pictures in my profile for reference. I believe I left some floor shots in there, check it out. It's still off the frame so I can always add or send you more pictures if need be. Make sure you're wearing safety GOGGLES when you're working with rust like this, been to urgent care 3 times in the last year to have stuff plucked out, not cool.
