Mine measures 1.307 but I was told by someone that it should measure 1.178.I hope he's wrong. I want to add a wide belt double pulley to my '48 engine so I can remove my electric fan and run a factory fan. I'm making sure I've got the correct pulley before I take my motor apart this fall....Thanks...Mike

That dimension may not be in most books since it's not a bearing journal...I believe it may be in the Service bulletins on '28-48 parts books that picture all the flathead cranks. I'm at work now, and crankshafts aren't adequately covered in this academic library...
Somebody here must have one of the mentioned books near the computer. If no certainty appears, PM me phone number and I'll either find a book or measure a crank tonight. Believe all FH cranks are same diameter there, but snout is longer from 1939 to support the crank fans and the more elaborate later pulley setups...I just discovered that an odd obstruction in a '42 pulley I have appears to be a crank extension piece, presumably made to allow rebuilder to fit earlier crank in later ch***is!

Don't think it will be...only 2 cranks, 2 1/2 really, in those years.
There's a full page pic of cranks with dimensions to distinguish in some late service bulletin or catalog.

I just spoke with Max @ H&H Flatheads and he told me the actual size of a new one is 1.311. I greatly appreciate everyone's input...
