Hot Rods Installing a 200-4r in a 1935-40 Ford chassis with split bones

Anyone done it? I am planning on tackling it as soon as I get back to OK this weekend. Just wondering what you did with the attaching point for the wishbones? I know you end up trimming the center section heavily. I know a 4 bar would eliminate the problem, but I was hoping to keep the bones if possible.

    Thanks,

    Root

I'm not sure but isn't that transmission the same size as a turbo 350

Sure like to see some other comments on this. I could never find any.

  5. Mine has a TH350 and I used the standard split kit that replaces the bottom of the crossmember.

I'm waiting for answers. My 39 has a powerglide that hasn't moved since 79. A 2004R seems right.

Pretty much, though the crossmember is different as it a little bit back from where the TH350 one would be.

I'm almost sure this trans has the trans mount the same place as a 400 Turbo and a bit more of a problem installing in the given area to work with, but I too will wait for the experts to chime in.

It requires more cutting to clearance the pan. The pan is massive on a 200. On a standard plate kit, like the TH 350 Chassis Engineering, you lose the tie rod mounts for the wishbones.

I have been doing some reading on this in the past and today for a refresher. I make no claim to know much on this subject but here is what I gleaned from my searches. Bottom line is this, don't split them unless you have to ( you have to). If you do, don't change the caster much. The splitting of the wishbones puts more stress on the axle but if the car is lowered the stress on the axle is minimized because the axle travels less than the stock height configuration. If you build a good strong bracket to hold the new rod ends you should be fine.

check with weedetrstreetrod.com . run by Weedburner 40 here - they do top notch chassis work, and sell parts. likely help you figure it out.

I made sure to place my new brackets at the same level as the CE bungs were to make sure caster remained the same.

  16. Last post was completely no help what so ever, it was the end of my lunchtime and I couldn't find the link.

I found this for a 700r4 into a '35/'36 frame (they have others for '37-'40), it ties into the stock frame. Maybe box the section above the wishbone mount or even tie that section into the outer frame rail next to it. Then use weld in split wishbone mounts.......I know it sounds hokey but you can make it look good.

The Morfab deal is a good one, but not for split bones unless you want to go to frame rails. Now with a 4 bar or Mustang II it would work, but it is made for using a 700R4.

OldTimer, that is exactly why I decided not to use the 700. It looked way more invasive than I would have liked. I think I may have an idea, but I am traveling with work and won't be back til Fridayish. I'll take a look at it then.

  19. True, was posting pics for ideas. The 200 pan is longer and the mount is further back then the 350. I still think after the center mods you have enough x member to run the split tabs for the bones under them.

Looking forward to weekend when Roothawg shows me a better way, and I say "doggonit", or something like that.

I know the tranny mount on a 2004R is back a little farther than a Powerglide and 350. I swapped to a 2004R in my 55 Chevy from a powerglide.
That's my concern on swapping a 2004R into a 39-40 Ford. The X-member may not allow for the extra width and tranny mount a few inches back.
Still waiting. I'd rather say yippy than dog gone it.

Well, the tranny guy is still waiting on my clutches, so it won't be til next weekend possibly.

The trans mount location on a 2004R is roughly the same as a TH400, the overall length is the same as a PG or TH350. I replaced the 400 in my 66 Caprice with a 2004R. It bolted to the stock crossmember, and I used a Powerglide driveshaft.

Just swapped a 2004R for a 350 on a 40 Ford with a Nova clip. It takes a lot of trimming on the lower flange of the X member and fabricating a mounting plate similar to what Chassis Engineering manufacturers for the rear trans mount. Ended up placing additional stiffening plates on the outsides of the X member where the trimming was done. All I can say is it's very tight and with the bones it may be more difficult. Problem is that the 200 is so wide at the tail section.

I'm reading this, on the edge of my seat, actually in the garage laying on the floor with a 2004R on my chest trying to figure out how to get it in, and it just stops :-(
    So, what happened?
