Anyone have any tips on installing a one peice rear main seal on a 5.0 block? The main cap is on and so is the oil pan. Which way does the seal go on? If you took a cross section of the seal, it looks like a "C" - does that "C" face the block or the transmission? Do I just place it on the block, and send it home with a hammer?

You want the lip of the seal, that rides on the crank, to be angled toward inside the engine. That way when pressure builds inside the crankcase it will force the seal lip against the crank, not force it away from crank.. Hopefully this is what you are asking & I didn't misunderstand, would be easier to explain looking @ the seal.

The open side of the C would face the back of the engine. If there's a little steel spring inside the C, load the cavity of that C with chassis lube or wheel bearing grease to keep that spring from leaping out on impact from driving the seal in place. If not, never mind!

Thanks guys! That is what I was thinking, but wasnt sure.

I guess there is a special tool that they make for this. I just did a little looking around and came up with this: http://www.ford-trucks.com/articles/2003/8.php .

Anyone know how far the seal is supposed to go in? Does it have to be right on the dot, or does it really matter that much- just as long as it totaly touches the block and crank?
