Asking you guys for advice on a steering box and setup I would like to install a new column to the box to the universals to the wheel spindle. I really need help on going from the column to the box as I can't quite understand how to safely make the transition. Would it be better to move the column down to the floor more and use a tilt column.
YOU LOOKING FOR TRADITIONAL DRAG LINK SETUP....OR???.... HARD TO BEAT A VEGA.... RECOMEND SALVAGE OVER THE OFFSHORE ONES. Maybe a borgeson .
I have followed your two other threads on wobble, and by now, I know you want a great setup to drive and be forever. You have boatloads of room along the motor, options are unlimited for a cross-steer that you mentioned once, or was suggested by Koz who built it. Always get the lower column in a good spot for your feet. And get the steering wheel where it feels perfect, height and angle. I'd ask the members for a company that has a excellent new Vega, not the junky ones. Then cross steer to the right spindle arm. If Koz left the 2nd hole for the cross link,,, That's great, or if it is missing, you can use the certain Jeep tie rod end with a second point that the cross link will fit into. ,
I would like to keep the steering on the drivers side, I can get a reverse Vega box from Borgeson or the GM 525 SERIES FROM THEM AS WELL, I BELIEVE THEY DONT WANT YOU TO USE THE Vega on a car over 2400 lbs.. I am not sure what my car weighs. I need some tips on the mock up, what should I order besides the column and box, it looks to me like I need two double joints and a rod to move the steering over.
Cross steer doesn't have as bad a tendency to bump steer, the condition where when you hit a bump, the car darts one way or the other. If you have a Speedway Motors catalog, they have some good drawings showing cowl as well as cross steering.
Cross steer is a little more fool proof as long as you include a panhard bar on that axle. Side steer you have more factors with angles and drag link leanths as compared to the wishbone that can lead to bump steer which is probably why the Vega got so popular. Vega would be fine in your fenderless early car, no need for the bigger box.
Lot less bump steer ,2400 lb. limit is a new one on me and there are not many cars out there lighter than your coupe,2600b. maybe?. Look at flaming river or others to see what you need as far as a box and which ends for your rod and ujoints. I would say don't get a "quick" ratio box as it may make that coupe a little twitchy.
In post 4 you say you'll need two double joints. Probably not. Just two single joints. A double joint is only for very extreme angles. The Borgeson site should explain somewhere about the capacity of their joints.
a buddy of mine has used two jeep boxes in a cross steer application and they have worked out extremely well. Both were on a 31 coupe and both steered effortlessly. Seems the box came from a 79-81 but I cannot remember at the moment. I could get the info from him if you need it.
Use the vega box and two u-joints and you'll be in great shape. Set the pitman arm link as close to parallel with the cross link as you can. I had to weld a 1/4" steel gusset for the third bolt on my mounting plate to get it right. Clearing the manifold, motor mount and getting the pitman arm in the right spot isn't too bad if your column is coming in under the manifold. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Flaming river sells a stronger Vega box - got mine from Speedway #910-32200 for $319.99 vs $199.99 for stock box - Claim 30% stronger - I needed more room for headers on my 1939 Ford - had a leaking junkyard 525 GM box. For the little extra money - the FR Vega box sounds good. Nice works very well in my 1939 Ford.
