There's a tab on the inner fender with a hole. I tried all the Tricks to install under tension, and ended up just prying the top of the spring over the hook with a screwdriver.
If you really need a Pic, I'll take one in the morning for you.

Here's video on how to remove them. It shows where they hook to in the first few seconds. I knew they'd be very similar to other GM's of the time.

Thank you! And yes if not too much trouble, would still like to see photo; I had to buy new inner fenders so no hole. Seeing it will help. Thanks again.

I remember my brother and I fought his 51 till someone showed me that video. So cool knowing these tricks. Made a set and used them once. Still have them somewhere ...

Sure beats the " 22 fat washers between the spring coils" method!

Too bad they didn't give the length of the tool in the video.

Was his 51 a car or truck? The video looks like the bottom is bolted to firewall. Others have said it bolts to inner fender. Maybe truck vs car is different? thanks

I made one of those tools just by eyeballing the length needed. It doesn't have to precise. You can hook the spring to a floor Jack stretch it open if the springs aren't on the car. There are a couple of YouTube videos about it.
