Who do you guys recommend for instrument restoration? My '56 Olds needs speedo and gauge repair, no aftermarket replacements available, etc.

Mo-Ma Instrument Repair in Albuquerque, NM 505-766-6661. They've done great repairs for me on original instruments and Stewart Warner gauges.

Hollywood Speedometer. They can repair all the gauges. They can, if you want, re-silkscreen the faces, change the color of the face of gauges and even the needle color. On an "old School" tach I had them install a modern movement from a new Autometer tach. I have used them on several different cars and have been extremely happy.

I saw this thread title yesterday and thought it one of those Viagra ads we get on here, glad I didn't report it
I too would call Classic but be prepared to pay an arm and an instrument for it.

    Hello Dad Was A Racer,
If I were in your shoes I would first contact HAMBer @e1956v (Rusty) He owns Speedometer Services in Colorado Springs, CO. A few years ago he restored my 1935 speedometer and did an excellent job. The price was incredible; he also sent it to me and told me not to pay him until I had it hooked up and was satisfied! Are you kidding me! That kind of customer service is unheard of!! Of course it looked awesome and to this day works great!! He as "old skool" as you can get, he's super nice, will keep you informed along the way and the quality of his work is superior.

If, for some reason he cannot complete all the work you need, you may consider Seattle Speedometer. I am not sure what their hourly rate is, but I have seen their work and it looks to be very high quality. They too, will do complete rebuilds/restorations.

HAMBer Bandit Billy is right. I had a guy contact me via Instagram last week regarding gauge repair. He said he got a quote from Classic Instruments for his gauge panel and it was over $3,000. As a gauge nut, I understand vintage gauges and panels are not cheap....but $3,000 could buy you a hell of a dash and gauges.

Here is the speedo Rusty restored for me. Yes it is larger (6" in diameter) :D

you can save a few bucks by taking care of some of it yourself, there are glass shops that mainly do shower doors and cabinet doors etc and at least aroumd here they will let me pick the glass i want and cut me pieces, guage glass would run me 8ish bucks per piece. you can also pulm them apart if youre confident or stupid, i am often the latter haha and do some cleaning, just remember to lay out a nice white cloth on a flat workspace so you dont lose tiny parts

OK, I had an opposite experience on a $700 356 Porsche gauge redo to electronic, I'm only mentioning because I didn't realize till I sent the other gauges to Palo alto speedometer, an when I compared them to there's, I had to send there's to palo alto... It looked as if who ever put it back together ate chicken wing's on lunch an put it back together, The inner face was Ridiculous next to the other's... Not saying they don't do decent work, Clearly You approved, I for one Would never use them..

I suppose it’s possible for any service shop to make occasional mistakes.

Classic instruments are probably the best quality gauges available now and they are known for that quality.

While your experience wasn’t good for you I don’t think it reflects that they are a bad company because their history , popularity and longevity in the industry says otherwise.

On top of that you never gave them the chance to fix things and make it right.

Actually the gauge was done several years ago, stalled project, I have dealt with Hartmut at palo alto before an can't say enough positive about there operation, Cut the loss move forward, The other gauges where done there... Follow suit

Palo alto fixed Everything including a new/better used bezel for $80.

Don't know if they're even still in business but if they are, DON'T use United Speedometer in Riverside, CA. JMO
