Hi all!!! Wow-- I hadn't had the chance to check in, in over a week-- and look at what I missed!! To answer the very first question, Grundy is PRIMARY on the collector vehicle. Our coverage is not supplemental. Also-- please do note that we encourage pleasure driving and hobby use! We want you to enjoy your cars. Mr. Grundy and Chuck Wasoski, VP, both have their own collector vehicles and drive them for enjoyment!-- They "get it." Our policies include unlimited mileage-- and they are AGREED VALUE policies (the safest way to go when insuring your collector vehicle-- The Grundy Agency came up with the Agreed Value concept in 1947 when Grundy, Sr. wanted to insure the collector cars that belonged to his father-in-law and friends!) In most states, our policies include: towing and labor expenses, auto show medical reimbur*****t (if you're injured at a show), spare parts, "trip interruption" (transport expenses, lodging, meals if you have a mechanical or electrical breakdown) and Inflation Guard (4%). If you have any questions, never hesitate to send me an e-mail: becky@grundy.com. :) Or, visit our Web site: www.grundy.com -- or call! 800-338-4005. Hope everyone is enjoying the summer! Anyone heading to Macungie Wheels of Time next month? I'm thinking about heading up there....

  3. Hey buddy if you were using State Farm you would have been lucky if they paid off anyway.

I just run PLPD on mine, I've never had much luck with any of them. I can tell you this I would not insure with a company that put many restrictions on me. Storage, milage or what have you can bite you in the *** when you got a claim. They are going to make you jump through more hoops than you can imagine and then still try to get out of paying.

    Hi Becky -

Does Grundy permit you to take the car out when you go to dinner and a movie? Drive it to work? Maybe even take it on a business trip?

Obviously, the collector car(s) would not be primary transportation for anyone in the houshold. But the need for this type of driving does occur.

    Thanks.

Kent, the cars need to be secure. A barn is fine. Parked outside is not. A garage is fine, a carport is not. This is to protect the car from thieves, vandals and mother nature. I do work for both companies and they want the vehicle in an enclosed, secure space.

And policy for a car is for that car. They need to meet the requirements for the Michigan No-Fault law just like your daily driver. This includes the $1M in Property Protection coverage that the state mandates on every policy. The medical should be like any other car (I keep 100K/300K on all my cars/trucks). Both companies are excellent and will usually go the extra mile. Hagerty is a little more expense if I remember correctly. The only real restriction is that they don't want the car used as a daily driver.

The only collector car claim that I've ever seen denied was on a ratty '87 Corvette convertible that the owner rolled thru a cemetary in Pontiac, MI. The guy had put 17K in mileage on it in the 8 months he had the policy. He had a 3K mileage limit on his policy. This was not thru Grundy or Hagerty. The guy had been trying to get around the high cost of insuring a daily driven Corvette.

NOTE: Both companies will insure a vehicle under construction. These have value too. I have a $5K policy on my Studebaker and when new parts are purchased, or additional stuff has been done such as painting the car, I can take pictures, show my receipts and increase my coverage in case the garage ever burns to the ground.

NOTE II: Niether company requires an appraisal, but I always recommend you have one done. It justifies your position when you start your policy and gives you piece of mind that you are covered for the right amount. I've seen a lot of cars that are UNDER INSURED. A '68 Corvette convertible with a 427 is worth more than $16K!!! Have the appraisal updated every two years or so.

NOTE III: I bring this up only because it's come up a few times the last couple weeks. Don't over insure your car either. Why? A friend of mine has a '92 Mustang with a lot of money invested. His appraisal is $48K. I can put a lot of money into fixing a late model Mustang insured for $48K. The car can be wrapped around a telephone pole and I could fix it for $48K. The big picture is an insurance company can put 75% to 80% into a car before it's considered a total loss. No one wants to fix a car that shouldn't be fixed, but the reality is that everything comes down to dollars and cents.

NOTE IV: If your car is a total loss, the insurance company is bound by the laws of your state. Someone mentioned putting a salvage ***le on the car after the loss. No one is out to kill the value of your 'salvage'. But different states have different rules and the insurance companies have to play by their rules. Some states require a salvage ***le regardless or the age of the vehicle and some may only require it if the car is newer than 10 or 15 years. This isn't the adjuster trying to stick it to you. It's the laws in your state.

NOTE V: Racing items; The only sure thing to keep you from getting a policy is nitrous. You might as well put the skull and cross bones on that pretty blue bottle because that is what any insurance company will think. Roll bars and cages will vary from company to company and will sometimes depend on the build. Nitrous is a racing item. Everything else is gray. I will say that modified cars will cost a little more to insure. For a build that will be more mild than wild, I could hear the wheels spinning in my agents head when I answered that the car wasn't going to be stock. I looked at a '37 Ford (all gl*** body) with a tube frame, racing seats, parachut and a big huffer sticking out of the hood (no nitrous). The car was insured for $140K. Top speed? 10-25 MPH! From his trailer to his parking spot and back. Vroooom!

I ran my truck through Grundy's Quote Creater, its a modified 1946 Chevy Truck, $5000 value. I got $101 for a policy. Is this a year or a month?

Well since I haven't seen this question asked here or anywhere else...

What are younger Rodders doing for insurance, If Grundy and others won't insure anyone under 25?

I think I just found a new insurer for my '80 El Camino as well. $70 a year. Alot better than $600 through Farm Bureau.

Is Grundy still a "Grundy Family owned business" someone was telling me he sold the name and everything off?

You're kind of stuck with a Stated Value policy with State Farm, Allstate, etc.

I know claims are administered with Philadelphia Insurance. I'm not sure how they are tied together. I believe the family is still involved, but to what extent I can't say.

Hagerty was also sold, merged, etc., with One Beacon Insurance out of Buffalo, though claims are still handled out of their office in Traverse City.

Collector car policies are much cheaper than those for your daily driver... you're losing hundreds of $$$ per year keeping your cars on a regular policy.

American National's CHROME program is very comprehensive and is excellent in both coverage and price. And the bonus part is, they will insure all your cars, your home, boat, motorcycle, ATV, and whatever else you have. Why call 15 different agents when I can get exactly the same coverage from one. Be smart people, shop your entire portfolio.

After 45 years of driving with no problems on my part, I have been involved with several other non insured people in traffic accidents. MY ***essment of automobile insurance has been and will remain:
    1. The inner workings of the insurance companys are a**** some of the best kept darkest secrets of the universe. I think these people take a blood oath when hired.
    2. As long as You are paying THEM (ins company), your relationship will be fine. When THEY have to pay YOU, your relationship will go to **** in a big hurry. and
    3. If you don't shop for price and coverage, you will pay too much.

MY OPINION, don't bother to agree or disagree. Good Luck.

My claims ***ignments for Grundy come from Philadelphia Insurance and so does my checks. The checks from Hagerty come from One Beacon. This really isn't a problem. The claims people from both companies are 'cl***ic car only' adjusters. It's all they do.

I priced out my insurance with Grundy, Infinity (who I also do work for) and Hagerty. Hagerty was the most expensive. Infinity and Grundy were the same price (give or take $1). I went with Infinity. Why? I already have my business insurance with Philadelphia Insurance so I spread the wealth around. I try to feed those who feed me. I was aleady feeding Phily soooo...

The Grundy Agency is absolutely still family-owned! Mr. Grundy is the President and CEO! His father started the company in 1947, when he came up with "Agreed Value" insurance to help his father-in-law and friends have the best coverage on their antique autos. Philadelphia Insurance is our underwriting company. Each of the Collector Car Insurance agencies you will come across writes their policies through a bigger "company"-- we use PHLY for most of our policies. You can learn more here: http://www.grundy.com/about/rating.asp

Hi there-- I'm not sure about the business trip; however I do know that our underwriters are comfortable with OCCASIONAL trips to work... a nice night out to a dinner and a movie, sure thing........ We want you to enjoy your cars :) We just require that they cannot be your regular daily transportation vehicles.
