I have a 1990 mustang 302 that was rebuilt before I bought it. The motor did not come with a manifold or carb. So I figured I would ask the pros here on the hamb. I have a AOD and looking at some of the web sites it seems that not every carb will work with a AOD (not sure why) I believe it has to do with the kick down cable. Anyway does anyone have a recommendation on a set up. I've seen the manifolds that allow the air to circulate under the carb. and cool off the g***es, not sure if that's necessary or just a waste of $$. The car will be used for cruising around and having fun with the family. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
I would recommend using an Edelbrock duel plane manifold like the one in the link below, I have used this manifold in the past and it works really well with an automatic transmission. the airgap manifolds would be waste of money for a car that's just for cruising. I used a Holley 600 on my 302 but another good choice would be an Edelbrock carb. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/edl-2121/overview/
While you're on the Summit website, check out their 600 cfm carb, just under $235). I just put one on my 56 with a 302/5 speed. Haven't driven it yet (no radiator), but it starts and idles fine. Had to adjust the floats, took about 2 minutes. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-m08600vs
And to address the AOD linkage to aftermarket carb, look to LoKar for the linkage kit. I don't have a part number on hand but the helpful guys at LoKar hooked me up with the complete kit to mate an AOD to a Holley 4-barrel. I believe the kit number your looking for is: KD-2AODHT (From LoKar's website). Hope that helps!!!
I am running this intake:http://www.kmjent.com/cart/ford-289-302-5.0l-polished-aluminum-intake-manifold.html After three years it looks like new just wipes off clean, most importantly Edelbrock and Weiand only run a single water p***age in the front of the intake this causes uneven cylinder temperatures where as this intake has front and rear water p***ages for even flow through out.No doubt you may have seen posts on the main board with SBF's running hot, this is why full flow is important.By having the rear p***age it also allows better placement of the heater hose and temp gauge to the rear fittings rather than having a fitting almost up against the distributor. The Lokar linkage for the AOD will make things EZ and will work with a Holley or AFB/Edelbrock Carb.Right now there is a smokin' deal on the intake $149.99 & Free shipping.
