believe it or not, until the mid to late '70s, corvettes were not very expensive to buy used. i knew quite a few guys that bought 'em for around $1k and did all kinds of weird things with 'em! when i was young, insurance was double on a vette, plus they were great targets for thieves.
about 1970, I bought a 59 corvette with a soft top for $900. Good paint, ran fine, interior complete, etc. I sweated selling it for $900 a year later. We went to look at a 53 and a 54 at a piano warehouse in downtown Dallas. Neither were running, one had six cyl with manifold and carbs, other had no engine. Guy wanted $1000 for both as I remember....we laughed at him and left. Every day going to college my senior year (1968/69), I walked past a Honduras maroon 62 with a black interior. Sign on windshield said $800. IT might as well said $800,000 since I was a broke college kid.
