crazy looking car. tube frame, Y block, Columbia overdrive, full bellypan, Ford axle front suspension, 56 California plates. anyone know the history of it?
Looks like a home built 50's sports car. I remember seeing a lot of cars like this in the small rod books and books like Popular Mechanics.
The radiator filler is on top of the motor, as you've probably noticed by now, & there were crossflow radiators as early as the early '60s: '60-'63 Galaxie had one available stock I retrofit one to my '59 Ranch Wagon & never had a cooling problem using it as a tow vehicle for a car trailer.)
cherry it out, paint it silver, mount ray guns on the fenders and drive around in a martian costume. that's what I'd do.
I've seen novelty customs with two front ends before, but this is the first one with two rear ends.....
It would never have been a Bonneville streamliner.. in its apparent era there was a class called SR or Sports Racing where it had to have the ability to seat 2 people. The 2 fastest ones were owned by Jack Lukin and by Nolan White. The most famous was probably the one built by Dean Moon and used a Devin body. The class “morphed” in to GasStreamliner. With what powered this it would never have been competitive at Bonneville.. but who’s to say.
Oh wow!, I just watched the video now and i really like this. Glad Squarepeg fab got it, they will do something with it besides just leave it sit in the background. I like the guys Otas(orange car under cover and his 1937 International builds too. I am going to watch the progress on this one. this is up my alley.
I'm with jaracer, that one has the build your own sports car vibe going real strong. A bit more advanced than most that pretty well used a stock Chassis with a pieced together body on it.
This car is currently listed on Bring A Trailer with No Reserve! . . . Checkout my (Pre-1964) Custom "Roadster" Project post . . . and here's a couple videos from the Bring A Trailer listing:
