The article is in Popular Mechanics Nov '36. More on Hemmings here (read the comments). It's in the movie Mister Cinderella (1936), on YouTube here starting at 1:14 and here starting at 0:40.

Midget racing was the hot thing in the '30s.

Great googly-mooglies! This is an ad by a major company printed in a high-circulation general-interest magazine. I couldn't find out what the H.A.M.B. guidelines are for pic content so I covered up a couple of details that were clearly shown.

  5. An observation here about post #605. If the mods consider it O/T, I'll strike it.
I was a commercial art major in school, and as such had the opportunity to study all sorts of ads and product posters through history from both the U.S. and Europe.
We Americans have a completely different view of the human body than does the rest of the world.
Like 123, I'm truly surprised that this ad would ever run in Life, but that was a period in time in the U.S. when a real effort was being made by ad men to bring the U.S. "into the fold" so to speak of the rest of the world.
If this ad were to run in a French magazine of the time, no one would have given it a second thought.
As a society, inmyarrogentopinion, we Americans still run behind the rest of the world as far as censorship.
I remember as a kid, I'm 64, when some of the most iconic parts company calenders were hanging on the walls of parts houses, gas stations, and hot rod shops all across the country.
I would like to see a thread on those "Pin Ups", but no way would I put the mods in a position of having to police such a thread. Sorry, that's my rant for the morning. Mike

Mike Britton, I was unsure when I posted the image in #605 it and now realize that it's not the right thing to show here.

  9. I don't think there is any harm done, it fits the subject line. Let's not get away from cars with a mute discussion. Post on!!

Here's a '39 Ford with '40 Ford headlights, '40 Buick grille and '49 Plymouth bumpers. The running boards have been removed and the top has been chopped 4-1/2". It was owned and partly built by Nicholas Schlauch with metal work and painting by his buddy Howard B. Townsend. The interior is by Nick's dad.

This one might be a year or two too "new" for the H.A.M.B. but it's certainly in the spirit.
Keith Ferrell's '36 Willys panel did 10 second E.T.s at 140 mph according to the article.

Remember building model cars? You still can -- there's plenty of them available. Here's part of the cover of the very first model car magazine that I bought. I was eleven years old.

Nostalgia racing isn't a new thing. Here's a Ford T from 1956 that was built on a "late model Ford chassis" (I think the author means a late T chassis). It has a 1923 Ford truck engine with a Rajo head and a Model A carb. It's not clear, but it may have belonged to Lindley Bothwell of Woodland Hills, CA.
