I've been thinking about re-doing my door panels on my 47 to a design that I was thinking about earlier. My thought was to make a panel with a small bead rolled around the edges to fit in the blue tape...or textured metal with a separate piece of trim over it. What's a clean way to attach this panel? Everything outside of the blue tape will be white vinyl.
The main securement will come from the pieces ( fixtures ) shown. To keep the edges on board @GordonC said.
You’re asking how to make a metal trim piece or insert? If so, look up aluminum extrusion trim Textured metal panels Trim comes in different sizes and shapes. Can easily be shaped several styles of textured panels
He is asking how to attach the panel he makes to the door panel. Lots of way to do it. Glue it on. Double sided tape. Small rare earth magnets embedded in the door panel.
What was often done by the factory was a formed trim with tabs that stuck thru the backing board. These were fitted over the upholstery, then bent over behind the board. That's a lot of custom fabrication with tight tolerances for a one-off. I've been pondering the same thing, and have figured it was a ton of work to make from scratch. Probably lay out the design on a board, use a router on a wood blank to make a channel then form some aluminum to fit, remember to include those tabs! Polish, then get the backing board and align everything. I guess you could use round stock or half round and form it. This could be drilled and tapped if the tabs sound flimsy. Tiny screws and big washers to spread the load. https://www.mcmaster.com/products/aluminum-half-rounds/ The next thought was to try to find a factory set that fit the idea. That's kind of a needle in a haystack. Some are repop'ed. https://www.speedwaymotors.com/OER-...nel-Trim-Moldings-for-1967-Camaro,117693.html Attaching the board to the door/kick/quarter is screws with or without cap covers, metal door clips or plastic Christmas trees. https://www.oreillyauto.com/shop/b/...im---molding/interior-trim-clips/74d1d12353dd
Here's an example. https://www.autoevolution.com/news/...olley-sniper-efi-v8-dream-191295.html#agal_30 A lot of newer cars just had chrome foil embossed on the upholstery. I haven't seen a DIY way to reproduce this technique.
