Some progress: @Dino 64 and I dropped off all the removable pieces (doors, cowl, grille shell, visor, headlights, garnishes, etc.) at Roy's paint shop.

No pictures, but bench racing with car guys is always time well spent.

great progress, love hugger orange. Just curious, why did you black out the inside of the ch***is?

    Great question. Here's why:

    1) So I don't feel compelled to keep the undercarriage show-car clean 24/7. This will be a nice driver.

    2) Esthetics. When seen from behind, the bright highlights (rearend, bumper & springs) jump out and the darker distractions (crossmembers, frame brackets, etc.) disappear.

    3) Tradition (plagiarism to be precise:rolleyes:). Gary Kessler painted his roadster's inner rails black. "A common '60's practice", according to TRJ #34.

    4) Cheaper, even with the extra masking. Easier to touch up too.

You need to bring the car to the roc and park it next to the Kessler roadster!

I like the black on the inside of the frame. Way more functional.

  9. Great job so far. Needs a pair of M&H racemasters though. Hehe.

Makes sense. Ive been thinking for a long time about painting the ch***is on my 40 orange, but not sure there's much point on a fully fendered car. I am going to have a few hugger orange 'highlights' and striping under there tho, and not worry about cleaning it once Im driving it..... I say that now, but..

Great build, been following for a while, my kind of hot rod.

  11. Hey Gary, I enjoy seeing how you do things... and that paint, beautiful!

    Shades of Tony Nancy's 22Jr...

    Keep up the good work,

    Sam

My 700R4 dust cover holes were neither standard nor metric threads (Maybe sheetmetal screws? Or Whitworth? Or alien? )

Anyway, I drilled and tapped them for 1/4-20 x 3/4" machine screws.

    Then dropped off the body...

I love the smell of urethane in the morning. You know that smell? It smells like... Victory."

A few deep thoughts now that everything is painted and back in the garage mahal:

    1) Tackling all the body work myself took a *LOT* more time and perseverance than I'd ***umed.
    2) When prepping for paint, you have to *WANT* to find flaws.
    3) It was worth the effort - Roy sprayed a beautiful finish and I'm thrilled with the results. :)

Sorry it took so long to find this tread, found it looking for info on a 354 HEMI in a 28-29 Ford on '32 Rails. I'll be reading and rereading all the info I need. Thanks! Bob

When I graduated from high school I went to work in a body shop. I did this full time until I went to trade school to become a machinist. As far as autobody work and my experience, I never developed the talent of being able "to see it with my hands". Well over 50 years later I'm still the same with bodywork, but show me what you need machined using different types of metals, aluminum, plastics, etc. and I can "see it in my mind before I even start!" I have a buddy that has nicknamed me "the problem solver". :D 60 Special

    Wow, Just...
I missed this until now. So I get to skip ahead. Looks like I got here just in time for the fun stuff. Glad I did. Boy, the body looks really nice. Happy for you. Have your fingerprints grown back?
