I was wondering if 120" would look to long for my RPU? Whats a good length? how much room should I have between front cross member and firewall? I was thinking 51" long body, with 24" behind it, and 45" for the engine area(SBF/AOD)does this seem a lil' long? It's not going to be channeled so the height shouldn't be to bad even with that length. Any suggestions? -Jesse
A Stock Model A is 103.5 inches. So is 16.5 inches too long? If it's put in the wrong place it might look goofy. If you stretch the cab for comfort, It'll probably be OK. doug
Jesse, did you see the mockup of my TractorT roadster/Lakester project? It was 121 inches in wheel base. I think it is too long but for the engine/trans/rear configuration I don't have much of a choice. For a traditional rod stubby is better.
just the right length if your making a modelA hearse .Lemmie guess you found a donor chassis ??BTW get out ta 35th once n a while .
[ QUOTE ] I was thinking 51" long body, with 24" behind it, and 45" for the engine area [/ QUOTE ] I think the stock Model A hood is almost 30" long,so 45" sounds big. Especially if your not running a hood and sides. It's tempting to push the motor forward to gain some interior room, but you risk having an ugly gap between the back of the motor and the firewall. 120" could be OK,or it could be real awkward. Start drawing it out to scale,or mock it up full size. I think the Alloway Coupes are 120" wheelbase.
it also would make a differnce how your runing your front axel. 120 with a suicide set up with the grill further back is going to look different then 120 with the grill at 120 dont know if either is going to look anything than realy long though mock it up i guess
No Steve It's been awhile since I've been there. No scooter I'm building my own, just tryin to get a feel what would be about right. I tryed drawing it up but with lack of graph paper it didn't come out right. I would mock it up but I'm lacking the frame material. I've laying it out with soap stone and a tape measure. -Jesse
if you want to do a cheap fullsize mock up, just use wood 2x4 like i did. cost me 10 bucks for wood and screws, cut it all, with kick up and everything, screwed it together. then i slid it under the body. best way to see what you will end up with, in my opinion. oh, and my A will be closing in on 120"
I went outside and did some better figureing and cameup with 112", this will leave me a nice long body with plenty of room for leg room and my keg fuel tank. I'll try to grab some pics in alil' while. -Jesse
Sounds a trifle long to me.To give you some perspective on it my Safari is on a 122" wheelbase,a 55-57 Chevy Nomad is on a 115" wheelbase and this T is on a 118" wheelbase.I'd try it with a 1/25th scale model first. Ray
My 29 RPU- was stretched thru body /axle was under crossmember as ford did- with a spring over axle...it was 112" w base. I thought that was pushing it. it was long but not silly.......9" over stock.
Okay I got it down to 109", thats with 34 inches from thr back of front crossmember to the cowl. I may beable to shorten the body up abit to. That is from the heads of the bell housing bolts to an 1 1/2" in front of water pump pulley, this sound about right? -Jesse
My 30 pickup has sedan doors (29 ¼ inches long) and the hood is 35 inches long, on A rails, this makes the rear tub about 4 foot long- if you measure from the center of the rear wheel to the back of the cab Its 24 inches so the same amount to the rear of the wheels = 48 inches. I am running hood and side covers, It does look a bit longer in the hood area but not overly long.
Um, my longbed 1960 F-100 has a wheelbase of 118 inches and that mother is LONG! I couldn't imagine a model A that was 2-inches longer than that...
120 is long. My 60 Buick rides on a 123.5" wheelbase, and they are BIG LOOONG cars. But the rear overhang on that thing is like 4 feet, so....
