I know they got a bad rap years ago with the billet **** but are they so bad?

after spending $80 on a Allen grove ac bracket i hated the looks of it and it would still need chrome. decided to make one out of aluminum then use the ball mill to make fins to match the rest.

i think it looks pretty good and not to billet looking.

    what do you think??

I always figured that there was a lot of difference between making something yourself out aluminum that worked the way you wanted it to and buying it because it was supposed to be the hot lick thing of the week. Just my personal opinion but the best thing I make out of aluminum is metal shavings on the floor.

What makes that so much cooler than billet is that you made it your SELF. Everytime someone asks where to get one, just grin and tell 'em you can hook them up. $$$ :)

  12. beautiful, and the best part is you made it your self!!! now lets see some pics of the mill you are using!!! I am an aspiring Machinist student, and Things like this are what made me want to become one. In cl*** everyday and we make damn near anything we can dream of on manual machines, I have not moved into CNC yet, because I want to learn everything I can about manual before jumping to CNC.

    Way to go.

Hell, make some other stuff, too, like fuel pump block offs and coil covers. You might just make a buck or two. Looks damn fine to me.

    Hey,

    That's hot!

Gl***bead or sandblast that thing, polish the edges, and some would take it for a casting!

I think it is Great Nice Job. I use my ball end mills alot.It gives things a much better look i think then the sameO sameO square looks.I also make use of corner round end mills. One must always think out side the BOX.:) Great Job.

  17. That looks great.

It looks like it was carved out of wood, made a sand mold of it, and cast in aluminum.

The major difference in the piece you made is that it is one off and not m*** produced like all the **** in the past billet age.

But the main difference is you made the bracket yourself and it has style! HRP

I think it's billet AND it's pretty. We're collectively hung up on the "B word"

Home made billet isn't the same as "store bought" m*** produced ****. Never was, never will be.

You made it, be proud of it. I think billet gets a bad rap from cars that were built on a billet theme. no personality.

thanks for all the kind words.

  25. When Iwas into bikes heavily I did this all the time and didn't care what people thought....one off stuff is cool. I like what you made. It is very easy to make simple stuff with a deep ball end mill to look like finned stuff and cl***y too.

Take your newly built one off stuff and use it as a master for some casting and produce some cast parts in low numbers.

When I was in High School we had a small foundry that we poured aluminum into sand cast molds...pretty neat stuff, sand, form, pattern and a sprue. Learned alot more than I realized. We did everything except the pouring of molten aluminum due to insurance/liability issues.

Tell folks you made it, they'll want you to make one for them, you can go into business, eventually you'll move to CNC equipment, and you won't be allowed on the HAMB any more

    :)

seriously though, nice work! Nothing wrong with making your own parts...

Ball mills don't make "billet", people make "billet". ;)

Nice work just the same. :)
