Projects is a ball mill so bad??????

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Slag Kustom, Feb 16, 2009.

  1. Did a carb cover for the pusher that way about 4 or 5 years ago. No complaints, of course who would?

Your stuff looks OK to me. Not every part that was even manufactured was cast, the blank had to be made originally. Some may have been carved out of a piece of aluminium.

A handsome and effective part, and even lightweight. What's not to like? Well done.

Looks great - and it's stuff you made, not something you bought.
    Super!

Great job there. It ain't billet when you made it yourself out of plate.

But the stuff I make I sandblast and paint cause I hate polishing aluminum. And you know in joisey that's gonna turn whiteand get bumpy next winter if you don't do something with it.

It looks great, i believe the bad coments about billet are referring to store bought stuff that is made by cnc in lots of thousands. homemade is always cool. I have hundreds of parts on my car that are all one off, but i don't post because it's one of "those" cars. best thing about manual machine work,is you can take a piece of aluminum, that might be a s****, and see something cool in it, then make it. it really is an art form. I might do a post on my coolant overflow tank. made the tank, brackets, whole deal from scratch.

are you going to paint the slots black? or leave it all polished? I usually paint my stuff like that black, then use red scotchbrite to polish off all the paint but the recessed areas.

The fact that he made it himself is good and all but the reason its cool is because its a gorgeous piece.

you can get the diamond clear from eastwood in spray bombs, good stuff ,i've used a bunch of it. great on polished aluminum. if you want to polish it once in a while there's also zoop polish. expensive, but it protects bare polished stuff against corrosion.

    I like it. Great work.
The way I remember it, way back when billet first appeared, it wasn't a four letter word, it stood for something one-of-a-kind, custom carved out of a chunk of material and wasn't m*** produced. Remember the cars Lil John Butera built? Back then, if it was billet, chances were there weren't any or many others like it. But then people who would rather copy than innovate, discovered automated CNC and China..... heck, now I've even seen castings marketed as "billet".

I'm lucky enough to work in an aircraft factory where i can get lots of access to pieces of "s****" aluminum that are too small for their parts, plus the machines to make my parts on. Nothing adds character to a homemade part like making it on an old manual machine.

it loses something programming a computer to make a part for you. just not the same. I used to like OCC when it first came out, they did everything by hand, then they went automation and it really killed the show. who wants to watch a machine make something? supposed to be about craftsmanship.

good question are homemade billet parts banned at billetproof also, or just store bought stuff? I know stupid question but just wondering. thought i would put up a picture of my aircleaners for the SU's not meaning to hijack the thread, made them by turning the aircleaners in a lathe, then ground a special rounded tool,to give the appearance of being ball milled. I could have rotated them in the mill, but i ground the tool to look like one of the ball end mill flutes and just used the lathe to spin them against it. those started off as 6 inch cast aluminum wheels for airplane tailwheels [IMG] [IMG]

I agree, but you can always use a late model 5.0 timing cover and never have to worry about it.

But it wouldnt look as cool as the finned block off plate.

I bet no one has a problem with it but Allen Grove... but then he already has your money.

    I like it. Looks pro!

That thing looks cool! I think the reason I hate billet is it just looks like a big square chunk of aluminum made by a robot with no sense of aesthetics.
