If the kid behind the steering wheel thinks it's a hot rod, it's a hot rod.

Seems like we got enough of a cross section of opinions here, folks. I suppose there is no real answer that everyone could agree to because the term "hot rod" means different things to different people.
If "home built by owner" is part of the definition, we would have to exclude muscle cars, Cobras, Allards, or any car not built by the owner. I suppose many would disagree. Well, how about just "home built"? Or substantially modified by owner? Or, not factory built? You get the idea. Anyway, it seems that the bottom line is that Morgan Plus 8's may be cool to some, but they fail to qualify under the strictest definition of "hot rod" and, despite the 1930's styling and build, and American V8, they are kinda o.t. here.
In the end it's not that important, just something I was thinking about. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Anglias are British, so being British has nothing to do with it.
But being stock does. There's no way I'd call it a hot rod.

You are right that the two V8s are the same motors.

If you do the engine swap yourself (a V8 into a 4 cylinder car), it is a hot rod.

If the factory built it that way, it is not.

There is really no such thing as a 'factory-built hot rod'. That is just Marketing jibber-jabber.

Reminds me of the guy who put a Morris Minor engine in a Triumph Herald. He called it a "Minor Triumph".
I have owned a number of Morgans....Ford and Triumph powered. Neat cars. But are they hot rods? Not bloody likely!!

Nope: Not a Hot Rod, but alot of fun to drive. Hand built, if you've worked on one you can tell. A Hot Rod is built better. 11 Machine screws in the left fender, 13 in the right fender, "Charlie thought 13 was better" A rough car not a inch of straight metal. But everyone has a dream!!

The New Areo is a interesting car though.

I get the feeling that someone has their eye on a Morgan and is hoping to get it deemed a "Hot Rod" so they won't have to go to the trouble of building one.

"But they fail to qualify under the strictest defnition of "Hot Rod". They wouldn't qualify under the mildest definition of a "Hot Rod". A British sports car? Most certainly. A hot rod? Definitely not.
