    NEVER!!!

  2. is that "reverse lockout" really a 3 speed shifter w/ sep reverse rod? I ask, because back in the day, we used to do that, 3 speed shifters were cheap and in our budget.

  4. LOL my 355 starts running about 3K and will happily run @ that RPM all day and has for 150Kplus.

My only problem with a standard is that sometimes I get lazy and don't feel like rowing the gears. On those days I am less of a hotrodder and more of a boat person I suppose. :D

P&B, all SBC's run great at 3000 rpm and run all day with no problems. I just don't want to be running close to 4000 rpm's just to keep up with traffic for 10 hours when I drive the 650 miles to our beach house in Florida. I'd much rather see 2000-2100 rpm on my tach then close to 4000 at 80-85 mph. I sure don't complain about the gas milage either. If someone wants to crank the shit out of engine just to keep up with traffic thats their business. I just don't choose to do it because theres no reason for it. Back in the day everyone wanted a 4:11 or 4:56 rear end but we didn't go anywhere on Interstate Highways because there were none. We mostly stayed in our own area.

Upgraded my Pontiac from an auto to a HD 3spd and a 3.64 rear. I love the gear noise. I'm sure a 5spd would drive nicely, but it would take a lot of the character out of the car.

  7. Not sure about his--- but the Hurst shifter in my '64 Malibu (mounted to an m-20 Muncie) has a flat red T handle that's a reverse lockout. Looks a bit different than this pic though. Can't remember the model name/number but I went to buy one for the wag a couple years ago and found that it was discontinued.

  8. I run around 3200 @ 70 with the new 3.89 rear, not bad at all. Definitely nicer around town picking up some RPMs with the steep-ish cam.

  9. Correct in your reasoning. Depending on the gear of course. I had a 3.08 in the Pusher and @ my 3K to 3200 sweet spot I was cruising @ 80 mph. Now with the engine in the raven's roadster and the deep gears it is only running @65 at that RPM.

A lot of your choices on RPM and Cruising depends on the build. An extreme example would be the Boss 302 that we had when we were kids. 3K would have been lugging the motor, it started climbing upon the cam @ 4K. But on the other end of the spectrum a stock low output 283 would be real happy running @ 2K. I seldom disagree with you and I am not now, your logic is always good, I think that it is just that we are shooting at a moving target here.

I found a company that makes a push-pull setup for my favorite transmission.

On my next build, I am going to have six-on-the-tree.

  14. Oh my God that 41 look awesome- the 4 speed is icing on the frosting on the cake.
Yes, that not so common a833 variant with overdrive is one I'm looking for for my Sub'.

the right trans with a hydraulic clutch hooked to the right motor and rearend can be a real joy - had a OT ('66) Ford Fairlane with a mildly warmed up 390 with hydraulic clutch hooked to close ratio top loader 4-speed back to a 9" rear with 2:75, or so, tall gears (never checked actual ratio) - slug from stop sign but, on freeway at 70mph shift down into second gear from fourth and was like hitting a nitrous bottle - lots of highway fun

  16. OEM 4 speed in my OT '67 bug. '53 Plymouth 3 on the tree. Love the sound of 2nd gear.

Part of my plan for my 48 Plymouth regardless of weather I keep the Chevy 6 or go small block Chevy for several reason seems everyone and his brother runs an automatic for the obvious reasons its easier, well I say they're equal, you need to run cooling lines and a trans cooler with a 4 speed you need to run clutch linkage but with hydraulic clutch set ups its not all that hard. For me I have two other reasons A; because I'm cheap:) and already have everything I need and B: my wife won't be able to drive it :D:D:D

IMG_7027.JPG IMG_2256.jpg Two, Muncie with a Vertical Gate shift in my '39 and a Muncie for the '32 with an old swap meet shift, the number on the stick says it's from a Hurst Olds, I don't know how that ended up in Australia

    What a great thread.

My street-bike days left me addicted to manual shifting.

I hate mush-o-matics, even in my commuter car -- got a five speed in that grocery-getter. My wife was scared sh*tless to learn stick, but once she did... she could not be stopped. She went out of her way to rent a five-speed turbocharged Citroen during our Honeymoon in France -- and insisted on doing all the driving.

If/when I get another hot rod, it would ideally be a manual 5 speed -- four for fun, fifth for freeway.

I have a cast iron A833od in my 38 Dodge coupe, with a Hurst shifter. It's a fun ride.

  22. Danny, I went one less when I pulled the 350 turbo out of my '40 coupe, and put a Saginaw 3 line 3 speed in it. The 2.79 rear gears love the 3.50 first gear. I considered using a 4 speed on the column, with a separate reverse lever, but chose to keep it simple.

Overdrive is the norm now to keep up on highways. Cali 80mph is the norm believe it or not I'm actually seeing semi trucks at 65 now here and sometimes in the 3 Lane over passing wich there not supposed to.

I did a 5 speed for traveling. So I can hear my wife and kid as well when speaking. and if alone hear my radio.

My truck had a 4 SPD but since it was a truck style trans I only used 3 gears out of 4.

I guess I'm the odd duck again, NO shifters for me, have an OT Camaro ragtop I purchased new w/ a 5 speed and will never change it. Have not had shifter vehicles since 1970 w/ exception of my OT and motorcycles.

I have a Muncie in my 59 vette, it was in there when I got the car, correct one would be a T10. 355 gears, don't need an OD in to run 80+ all day. I need to pull it out, replace the syncros and re-bush the shifter, not looking forward to it but it must be done before the HAMB Drags! Works fine under 5000 rpm, but hard to get into 4th when shes wound up. Not easy to adjust the shifter when the trans is in. It's been about 40 years since I tore into a Muncie, any suggestions on mods or tips would be appreciated, although I expect there is lots of good info somewhere on the hamb.
