Technical Is asking for the VIN/Data plate considered sketchy?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by theconvertibleguy, Jun 23, 2023.

  1. So I've had about 30-40% of the adverts that I've contacted tell me that they won't share the VIN/Data plate on the cars that they have for sale, which to me seems incredibly sketchy. Is it poor form to ask for that? Is it pointless to do for cars that are older then rock and roll? I figured it was just normal to want to confirm that but the amount of people that seem downright hostile to it is giving me pause.

  2. I would not do it without blocking out the last part of the VIN.

Most Smart Ones are not going to give Vin ,
    To many Scammers & Thieves,
Most of time your are going to get
    Model # prefix #
    Last 2-4 of Vin #
Then when you are in person then you can check paper work to compare to Vin,
Then you will Need Knowledge of what you're looking @

Just curious, if I took a pic of my license plate, took a pic of the VIN/SN, yet I hold the****le, how can I be scammed?
Heck, to take it further, if I took a pic of the****le, to verify the above matched, how can I get scammed?

I would imagine any PhotoShop genius would be able to re-work your pic and come up with a better****le than you have. Hey, you want to play some poker? ;)

How many threads have we had in the past month about scammers using other peoples pics and info to place fake ads?
The guy that posted this thread may be legitimate, but how would you know that some random responding to your ad and asking for pics/details is the upstanding member of society you hope they are? Leap of faith???......:confused:o_O

The last question doesn’t answer what you’ve quoted, how can I be scammed? I have the vehicle, I have the****le, how can you having that information affect me?

I’m not arguing, just wanting to figure it out. Ie like the folks who black out license plates…heck, I could walk by and snap a pic of the plate if o saw a vehicle, right?

Maybe it can't affect you, but surely a great guy like you would not want anyone else to be shafted by a scammer using your pics/info...

All modern cars have the vin number showing for all the world to see.

I think a vehicle's VIN can be obtained just by seeing the license plate. Can be in Arkansas anyway.

Might not effect you directly, but it sure makes it easy for scammers to rip off a lot of other people.

You must have a lot of faith concerning the security surrounding your car. They have your name and your address. They already have a picture of your****le. Its dated. A****le that would have a date preceding the date on your****le, would be hard for you to prove you ever really owned the car.

They can find out pretty quickly where the car is, and when you won't be near it. If someone steals your car, it can be in their possession pretty quickly, and the****le can be in their name pretty quickly, even before it was stolen. A few months of hiding both away, and be some distance from where you live, and you may never see your car again.
Lots of ways it could turn bad for you from that point.
If they really wanted to screw with you, having a****le with older dating then yours, they could go after you for stealing their car.

You won't be able to run a Carfax or similar on a HAMB era car, so what will you do with the VIN anyway?

I have often wondered why people black out the license plate when you drive around with it all the time were everybody can see it. same thing with the VIN you could walk around and see alot of them through the windshield but I would feel funny giving it out to a stranger

Same as above. If you already going to purchase. Or selling. State or ask that the VIN matches****le. If a deposit is given or the guy is person. Show them.

Okay, I’ll play along. My signature is not on the****le to sign it over you you or your buddy. So you forge it. Now what are the odds that you can match my signature? Via on a****le or a fake BOS? So now the****le is in your name or your buddy’s name with the DMV, I’m willing to bet that you’d lose the battle in front of the judge.
    But that’s just my thoughts.

Maybe not in all states but in Missouri I'm almost positive that the only person who can apply for a lost****le is the person that the state shows as the owner that they have on file.

When I’m off later in the week, we’ll start small. You could then become the proud owner of a ‘99 Voyager!!!

^^^^ So substitute VIN for SN. Feel better now?

  28. A friend showed me pics of something similar that recently happened.

A friend of his was interested in an (ever so slightly off topic by year) early Chev RS/SS pony car for $75,000. My friend said "have him send pics of the vin plate". The seller did. The vin plate was clearly homemade/hand stamped/completely incorrect and the rivets were typical hardware store items, also nowhere near correct. There is no way this car would have passed a legal vin inspection if the buyer lives in an area that requires them as part of ownership/title transfer.

My friend ended up finding him a documented legit car, much closer too, and for $5,000 less.

I can fully understand a seller wanting to protect himself from possible fraud but I can also understand a buyer wanting to verify what he was potentially buying was truly legit. That being said, I have only ever purchased a vehicle that I could lay my hands on.

My thoughts on alleged "smoking deals" that are too far away ... "if they are such great deals, why hasn't someone local already purchased it?"

Treat your VIN # as if it were your SS#.
