My model A has a 1940 Ford car front axle. I’ve had trouble with the shock adapters rotating on long road trips, making the shocks rub against the shackles. I see that both the perches and the shock adapters have a slot for a key. I want to add a key today to prevent this rotation in the future, and it just occurred to me that the spring perches might need to be keyed to the axle to keep them in alignment with the spring to prevent bind or funny wear on the bushings.

My question: is the axle slotted for a key, to keep the spring perches in alignment, as well?

  2. The answer to that is No, there is no stock keyway in any stock parts that I'm aware of. I have fought that issue before and have seen the slot in those parts. My choice for an easy fix is to just weld that shock mount to the bottom of the wishbone bracket making it a part of the wishbone. Never had another issue after welding it together.

Aftermarket perches and lower shock mounts use the keys, but not axles.
