Denis, that'll never sink in around here...very few will understand publishers are not independently wealthy...!!!

Hey there Dennis give it up. Us old timers just have to give up trying to make this case. Don't you know "Magazines are dead", "editors are idiots", ad guys? - hey we're "just whores", magazines had nothing to do with the growth of the hobby world wide, and "nobody ever learned a damn thing from a magazine? That's the truth, I'm told.

Then why the hell am I sharing a room with all this rotting old paper???? I guess I just love the pretty colors and that musty smell of old newsprint.

Glad I got to ride the dinosaur before it died. :)

Maybe I look at things a bit differently too.

To me, the real investment is not what I pay for the magazine but the time I spend reading it.

And from what I've seen, a lot of Rodding type magazines arent worth that investment right now...

Are wiring stories and installing patch panels OVER AND OVER really what the current state of hot rodding is about? The mags would make you think so. Just like the truck books that show how to replace cab steps and bed wood EVERY issue. Zero creativity.

Its not my responsabillity to provide a sollution.

    I'm just a consumer. ( or at least... I was )

And there are still some small/ niche kind of magazines out there that I'll buy.

( and, of course... the old littlebooks )

Wasn't blaming you- just agreeing. Six or seven bucks for something that falls apart on the way home just isn't worth it. I used to be fanatical to have every issue of every magazine for the first 40 years of my life- 2010 was the first year since 1970 I let that tradition pass- just wasn't there any more.

    Or:
Installing dropped spindles on a new Chevy Long box PU.
Next month, installing the same spindles on a short box GMC.
Followed by, installing the same spindles on a short box Chevy.
And a month later, installing the same spindles on a long box GMC.

Maybe we don't drink the right kind of Koolaid.

    Yes Jim, right you are.

Just cross out "spindles", and write in:
"whatever Cookie Cutter parts the biggest advertisers are pushing".

Yeah, I was pretty sure we were agreeing...:)

    Its really pretty simple.

If they can sell a mag for less than the shipping cost, then what you pay is not the commodity.

You reading the ads is. ( in other words, your time and attention )

So then they'd better make the bait ( the articles ) be good enough to get you to read them.

And not be more Advertising in Disguise...

One thing that has not been mentioned is our ageing hotrodders like me have a hard time reading print over pictures and many mags love to do that. So you get an article you like and can only read half of it you get frustrated and quit buying magazines. I'm down to the Rodders journal and get frustrating with them also for putting print on the pictures. I hope the people in charge are reading this.

I'm sure you have all burnt your copies of Street Rod Builder and Super Rod by now, but I was curious if any one hasn't. I'm looking for a specific issue. A car my boyfriend helped build is in it. I wanted to compile all the magazines he's been in and these are the two I can't order a back issue of.

If anyone has the May 2007 issue Super Rod Builder or the September 2008 Super Rod, I would be so grateful if you would contact me.

    Thanks!

  18. Ha Ha, you must not have really read this old thread - but Buckaroo is out of business so I guess you won't see them "pushing" anything ..... ;)

  19. Just been talking to a fella who has recently come back from New Zealand.
He was insisting that he'd just bought a current issue of Street Rod Builder
over there. When I said they had gone out of business some time ago, he looked in the mag and said 'no, they're still the publishers'.
I'll have to phone him back and get him to have another look at the date on the mag. He said it was January . . .

Tom Mc mullin from street rodder magazine told me the magazine business is tough because when you tell the bank that 60 % of your product you produce is thrown in the trash from no sales they don't like to invest in your company. RIP Tom.

I used to live just down the road from Gerry Berger in Clemmons, NC. He was just getting started with Rodder's Digest (early 1990's) and was pretty stoked about getting out and expanding. He had great cars and was a good guy to learn from. He even offered the 1947 Chevy Delivery to me for sale as it had well over 250,000 miles on it. I drove it and it was well worn and rode very hard. I passed on it but should have bought it in hindsight.
After Gerry moved down to Florida, I noticed the magazine starting to diminish. Too bad. It was one of the the first "Grass Roots" type of hot rod magazine. Hope that someone can re-launch this type of magazine.

Maybe you could proofread this? It makes no sense and I have no idea what you're saying. However, this thread is VERY old.
